Can I Bring Corn in luggage?--UPDATE POST #30

If you do go the dry ice route, make sure that there is LESS THAN 5 pounds of dry ice in your container. That is not just a TSA regulation, it is an FAA HAZMAT regulation.

I thought maybe "The Canned Corn People" were planning another trip to WDW! :goodvibes

leebee - LOL! You know you've been around the DIS for way too long when the first thought that comes to mind after reading the title of this thread is the canned corn people! :)

I obviously need to get another hobby!

Me, too! I will never forget the family who gathered for the three o'clock parade and pulled out the can of corn and spoons while waiting!!!

The canned corn story just cracked me up, and stuck in my tweaky little brain. That and the "the turkey legs are really EMU" threads from such a long time ago! I guess you can't tell how long a person's been around simply by checking their post count, huh? I think I first found the DISboards in 1997 or thereabouts...

ANyhow, back to the thread. I would seriously NOT put the corn on dry ice. That stuff can freeze anything, and you'll end up with nasty corn mush! Also, my DH (the guy with the PhDs in chemistry and physics) says that the evaporating dry ice will change the pH of the corn and it'll absorb the vapor and chemically change the kernals. (some folks know too much...)

Whenever I drop my bags to the TSA they always ask if there are any weapons or perishable food items. I always assumed you weren't allowed perisable food items in case your bag got lost--eww could you imagine? Or maybe they put a sticker or something on it to identify it. I would scour the TSA site before I put the corn or cheese curds in my checked luggage just to be safe.

OMG what a blast from the past. I forgot about the Canned Corn People!

Honestly, I would be more worried the shape of the corn when going thru the xray scanner might concern TSA, and they'd pull you aside. Maybe when you put your carryon on to the conveyor belt, should you pull the corn OUT and let them see/scan it separately? Or just put it in a checked bag? It sounds like NotUrsula knows what s/he is talking about so you should be able to get the corn onto the plane- it's just a question of what's gonna be less hassle for you. IMO, I'd get to security maybe 15-30 mins sooner than originally planned, just in case they pull you aside for a bag and body search.

Well, I got on the plane to Maine today with my corn. I shucked 18 ears of corn and stuck it in ziploc bags and sent it in my checked suitcase. It made it here perfectly fine and no questions asked.

Glad to hear your corn made it safe and sound..I think my mother has decided to put hers in her checked bag, she's going to shuck it and then put it in seal a meal bags

If you are going to check the corn, I would get a heavy duty styro cooler and pack with dry ice since it will be in the cargo hold. The tarmac (outside) and cargo hold are not kept to the same temps as the rest of the plane.

If you plan on carrying on, just use frozen grapes in zip-top bags as ice packs. There is a small town grocery near my parents house that makes the most amazing pimento cheese spread and chicken salad. I carry on a quart container of each with frozen grape "ice packs" every time I go home. I throw out the grapes after the 3 hr plane ride, but the chicken salad and spread are still cool at home.

Oh what a great idea, using frozen grapes, I'll have to let mom know about this one..maybe she can put the corn in the seal a meal bags and then but that in a baggie with frozen grapes..i know we won't do the dry ice, not something mom wants to worry about..but thanks for the grapes idea :cool1:

ok so they just got back yesterday and mom was telling me what happened today...So my mother ended up putting the corn, cucumbers and cheese curds all in her checked luggage...TSA went through EACH the THREE bags my mother and daughter had and searched them very thoroughly...They cracked open each of the cucumbers and picked at each ear of corn...My mother also had some dry rice crispies cereal in a plastic gallon size bag and they went digging in that, not closing it all the way...when she was leaving Milwaukee we witnessed TSA pulling one of her bags out of the xray machine and searching it, we asked if anything was wrong and the guy said no, they just had to check cuz she had a can spaghetti o's and 2 glass jars (one was grape jelly and the other was spaghetti sauce)...well upon arrival in Orlando the grape jelly and spaghetti sauce never made it, they were removed from her bag..the only thing in each of the bags was a note from TSA saying they had searched her bags..she was not too happy with them especially with the bag with her corn and cereal, there was a mess on the bottom of the bag..luckily that bag was not returning home so it was just thrown away...I understand why the TSA has to do this but did they really have to search all of her bags? she has said the next time she goes to FL she will NOT be bringing any food lol...thanks everyone for all the info..just wanted to let others know my families experience

Sorry to hear that it sounds like TSa had a good meal I would say file a complaint but they are federal workers and can't be fired. If they get suspended they use it like vacation but file ine they owe you some money fir catering lunch for their employes. Next time put plastic fruit in there mybe ine of them will bite down and break a tooth that show to mess with people food. Mybe wrap them in packers stuff so they don't touch them. Well I hope she has fun besides all her items being destroyed.

First of all congrats to your sister getting married and glad to hear they had a great time. I can't beleave they cracked open the cucmbers and put them back if they thought they found something and they alreadytook stuff out your back just throw them out. Not saying they should throw out your items but who know what they did to them sure nothing. mybe next time if they travel with food make alittle bag of food to give to the tsa so they wont feel like they have to take the food out of your bag. It sad they went throgh your moms bag and did that nad probelry let other thing they should of cuaght in other bag go through well as long as it didnt ruin there time i guess their a happy ending.

the cukes! What in the world did they think they were? It's also amazing the way they do things at different airports. At BWI (Baltimore) they didn't bat an eye at my corn. I am still baffled about the jelly and spaghetti sauce disappearing.

Quite honestly, I'm surprised that ALL the fresh produce wasn't removed.

There are strict quarantine rules about transporting fresh fruits and vegetables into Florida as a way to keep foreign pests out of the state so as to not affect the crops that grow there.

The fact that they 'cracked' the cucumbers and opened the corn may have meant they were looking to see if there were bugs in them.

They cannot be too careful.

Can you point me to your source?

I have never heard of that being the case with domestic travel.

I understand what you are saying but we had checked with the airline and even told the TSA agents what she had in her suitcases and they said it was fine..it would have been different if they had been traveling internationally but domestic you can bring food..so if they are looking for bugs then how do you explain going through the cereal?
