Ok let's try this again..My mother is going to be leaving to visit my sister in Fl in the middle of August and my sister has 2 requests-she wants some good ol WI cheese curds and some local sweet corn...We are not sure of the rules about this so I'm hoping someone here can help me out...Mom was thinking she would seal a meal the sweet corn and she should be ok that way, but I want to verify before we do it and then get to the airport and be told to toss it...also would you put these in your checked or carry on? TIA!

i would check with tsa.gov it should be okay but it depend if the xray will think it somethings elese. plus if there k-9 unit checking bags it might make the k-9 to pick her bag because it might smell the food. i know the dogs are train not to do that but they might also train them signal them with food because drug smugglers use coffe to throw off the dogs and the police started to get wise to it and start train them differ between coffe. i know your mom not carrying drugs but just incase because all she need is the dog to give the handler a signal and all her bags will be inspected and it might delay her flight. long story short she should be fine and tsa.gov is easy to use and you could email them to make sure what the offacail stances. i hope this help proberly more info then you need or wanted have a safe trip. you wouldnt happen to be packer fans.

just checked tsa when you go on the site seacrch for food then click the food and bev it tell you will be okay and whole to pack it.

I clicked on this because I thought it would be about what to do if you found corn in your luggage.

Thank you so much! and yes my daughter is a HUGE packer's fan, we recently went and toured the stadium

not sure about the rules now but, I did it a few times before 9/11 and had no problems. Actually we brought corn and tomatoes (my family lives in Florida but used to live in NJ so they really missed Jersey corn and Jersey tomatoes.) We had a HUGE box with the corn and tomatoes and a very large duffle bag filled with 5lb cans of Pathmark instant iced tea(i think there was 25 or 30 lbs of iced tea maybe more). They insisted that no other instant iced tea tasted as good as Pathmark brand and there was no Pathmark grocery Store in Florida. I know my family is so weird!

lol good to know we're not the only ones who take corn across state lines lol

Corn should not be a problem at all, though it would be courteous of you to seal it, just in case an insect might be trying to hitch a ride. (Or in case the bag got lost in the summer heat -- sealed-up corn doesn't age too well without refrigeration.)

The USDA/ATF beagles that were mentioned by a PP do not work domestic security; they are only at the customs checkpoint in the international arrivals terminal. If someone tried to bring fresh corn through that checkpoint it probably would be stopped, but as you are not an int'l traveler it won't be an issue.

Just FYI, TSA does not have any kind of authority re: domestic drug trafficking, and they do not have sniffer dogs that are trained for narcotics. Local law enforcement might happen to have them in the general area, but any dogs run by TSA are trained to alert on explosives, not drugs.

I thought maybe "The Canned Corn People" were planning another trip to WDW! :goodvibes

Honestly, I would be more worried the shape of the corn when going thru the xray scanner might concern TSA, and they'd pull you aside. Maybe when you put your carryon on to the conveyor belt, should you pull the corn OUT and let them see/scan it separately? Or just put it in a checked bag? It sounds like NotUrsula knows what s/he is talking about so you should be able to get the corn onto the plane- it's just a question of what's gonna be less hassle for you. IMO, I'd get to security maybe 15-30 mins sooner than originally planned, just in case they pull you aside for a bag and body search.

leebee ... you and I put live Lobster in our luggage! ;)

You can put beer or bottle water in your checked luggage, so corn is not a problem!

thank you so much everyone for the responses! looks like some local wisconsin corn will be headed to fl, in checked luggage! my sister will be very happy

Sealing the package doesn't accomplish anything because the authorities are concerned about bugs in the corn at the origin and getting loose at the final destination.

it is so funny that you asked this question because I am about to fly to Maine and my MIL wants me to bring her some Maryland corn! I was just going o shuck it before we left and bring it in my carry on. The most that will happen is that it will be thrown out by TSA and I will be out $4.

Absolutely -- if there are agricultural quarantines in place for travelers. However, there are none for domestic passengers entering Florida. (There are some for commercial shippers, but that's an entirely different situation, and as it happens, none of the current alerts that I can find involve maize pests.)

exactly what i was thinking...just shuck it and then put it in plastic bags or whatever and show TSA before going through security..I think she's gonna put the cheese curds in the carry on as well, so i figure as long as she shows security they will tell her what she can and can not have..worst they can say is no and they will toss it

Wow, we could be related except for the tea. We also miss Jersey Corn and Jersey Tomatoes and I always bring them back and have done so since 9/11. I think I actually hand carried the tomatoes and steak sandwiches and pieces of pizza on the plane. Security people in PHL wanted my Pizza but other than that the checked corn and bologna made it fine. Kind of humorous if you ask my DH, but I love it.

If you are going to check the corn, I would get a heavy duty styro cooler and pack with dry ice since it will be in the cargo hold. The tarmac (outside) and cargo hold are not kept to the same temps as the rest of the plane.

If you plan on carrying on, just use frozen grapes in zip-top bags as ice packs. There is a small town grocery near my parents house that makes the most amazing pimento cheese spread and chicken salad. I carry on a quart container of each with frozen grape "ice packs" every time I go home. I throw out the grapes after the 3 hr plane ride, but the chicken salad and spread are still cool at home.
