Can I be fired for this??

I see now. If you disclosed your insurance information, they would have privy to your personal situation. It seems that in this case, you were in a no win situation. If you disclosed it would make public something that you wanted to remain private. And if you didn't disclose, they could fire you without just cause. It seems to me that I would just talk to someone from the ACLU. They could tell you better than people on a message board if this would be discrimination.

Good luck. It seems that your ex-employer put you in a terrible situation.

Yes, that company policy needs to be challenged. If you are covered elsewhere, they should be glad you are not costing them more money. That's how I feel about it and I agree....you have a right to privacy. Good Luck!

I'm not a lawyer, so I can't advise you on the legal issues. But the way I see it, you're probably better off (especially since you have a new job lined up). I don't know about you, but I wouldn't want to work for a company that would fire an admittedly good employee over something so utterly absurd. Doesn't bode well for how they'd treat you in the future, you know?

In my state there is an "at will" clause similar to many other states. The company is under no obligation to let you know why they're letting you go.

I know. I was let go from my company over a year ago after four years of service.

No reason was given, but they did give me an option to resign which I took. I still have absolutely no clue why they let me go. Even the co-workers I still am in touch with are clueless. The only thing I can think of was that I was pulling in too much overtime and the department was way over budget. (??? I'm just guessing here)

But you're right about the unemployment being paid. I collected not only my 26 weeks (because the company gave me no alternative - quit or be terminated, I had no choice) at the topped out rate, but I was also eligible for a 13 week extension, which hit the company again for more unemployment fees.

I'd say let it go. You wouldn't really have wanted to be a part of a company that uses such flimsy excuses for terminating an employee, would you? And who knows? You could have invested some serious time, turning down other lucrative offers because you wanted to stay with this company, only to be let go for no reason.
