Well your original post and the obnoxious immature way you worded it belies your statement that you don't want to start a debate or offend anyone. How's that for not sugarcoating????
To answer your question, just as you have the right to listen to what you want, I have the right to hate it and try to change it if I so choose. Then you have the right to fight me and work to not have things be changed.
That's always the problem with folks who use their "rights" as an argument...see, yours are no more or less important than mine. It really boils down to who has the ability, patience and wherewithal to fight for their rights to be protected. And guess what??? Sometimes the liberals win and sometimes the conservatives do.
So you'll support a conservative's right to fight for change in the things that you believe in, such as child abuse? Well, that's good. But what about the rights of people who believe that child abuse is OK? Again, why should your belief that it is wrong supercede their belief that it is OK? Keep in mind that I am not supportive of child abuse in any way, but just taking an example from what you initally posted.
And just to remind you, "all" conservatives do not agree with censoring certain things. Neither do "all" Republicans. Painting with a broad brush weakens and dilutes your argument. If I said "Why do all you liberal democrats want to ruin the moral fiber of this country by allowing all this disgusting filth on TV and radio" don't you think that many folks here on the DIS who have a more liberal leaning or consider themselves part of the Democratic party would take offense to that, as well they should?
To be perfectly honest, in general, most American citizens are pretty middle-of-the-road and can agree on some points of most issues, if we could get away from the "liberal" and "conservative" and "Republican" and "Democrat" labels that we are always throwing at each other. Realistically, don't you think most people want a strong country, with decent leadership, with a government that helps the less fortunate to a degree while attempting to also help them help themselves? We all want to be able to say what we want to say. I think the average citizen pretty much wants to stay within the fringes of good taste and decency, in their speech, in their behavior, in what is shown on the media. You have some responses to this thread from folks who consider themselves Democrats who take issue with how much distasteful stuff is shown on TV or on the radio.. I would agree with them and I am the dreaded Republican
You refer specifically to Howard Stern, so I will address my comments to him as a subject. I don't like him. I think he is far less talented than he used to be. I remember when he started in the radio business...I was in my early 20's and listened to him all the time because he was funny, pointed, and insightful. Now he's just obnoxious. Do I want him off the radio? No I do not, because just because I would choose not to listen to him doesn't mean someone else should not be able to if that is the type of entertainment they crave. Therefore, as a conservative Republican, I will tell you that I would not lobby to have Howard taken off the air. I will leave him for all of you who enjoy pointless, obnoxious, immature "humor" to enjoy, while I listen to other stations, which have entertainment on them which I enjoy.
Kind of blows your theroy about "all" conservative Republicans, doesn't it?
