There are two ways Disney handles this transaction. One is when you upgrade within the first 7 days of use of the ticket. The other is when you want to purchase a higher value ticket after the first 7 days of use of the PHP.
If you do the transaction before the end of the 7 days after first use of the PHP, Disney will credit the entire amount that you paid for the ticket towards the price of the AP. The AP will be back dated to the day that you first used an admission on the PHP. Please note that in order to upgrade to an AP during this period you cannot have used ANY of the plus options on the PHP. If you used any plus options, you will only be allowed to upgrade to a PAP.
If you are going to do this after the 7 day window has elapsed, you will get a dollar credit for the remaining unused park admissions based on what you paid for the ticket. Unused plus options carry no dollar value for this. Disney will apply the dollar credit of these unused admissions towards the price of a brand new AP. The AP will run one year from the date you do the transaction.
In all cases, once the last day of use on the ticket has passed, you cannot upgrade it.
2) We are going in May so I have already booked using the AP rate code, but where do I buy the AP? Online?
If you are going to apply another ticket to the purchase of your AP, you can only do this in person at a Guest Relations location at the major parks or at DTD while buying you AP there.
3) We are buying 1 AP so that we can save on our room, but the other two tickets are hopper passes...if we should decide to come back at Thanksgiving...and we have already used our hopper passes, can the amount used "within" the time period of the annual pass be applied to the cost difference...(that was as clear as mud..huh?)
The entire cost of the ticket can only be applied to the upgrade during the first 7 days of use. If you use the pass in May and wish to upgrade it in November, you cannot have the entire price of the ticket applied to the AP.
Only the dollar value of the unused major park admissions can be applied to the cost of a new AP if you used the ticket in May and want to get an AP in November.
