When I went to ship some DVD's I sold on Amazon the other day I requested Media Mail and the post office clerk said, "Is it a book and only a book?" I was surprised, but I just lied and said yes, because I was not about to pay $6+ for Priority Mail (Amazon gives you a lousy $2.98 shipping credit.) Since when is media mail ONLY for books? Their own website says it's for books, DVD's, and CD's. I would ship first class, but this was a DVD set and first class only goes to 13 ounces!

I have a feeling they are trained to deny Media Mail as much as possible and force you to upgrade to Priority...

I think that clerk needs to go back to Mail101. Media mail is ANY media. Books, magazines, manuals, cds, tapes, records, etc. Direct from the USPS website:

Media Mail® service is a cost efficient way to mail books, sound recordings, recorded video tapes, printed music, and recorded computer-readable media (such as CDs, DVDs, and diskettes). Media Mail can not contain advertising except for incidental announcements of books. The maximum weight for Media Mail is 70 lbs.

Don't you love dealing w/ USPS? Although, when I go into the local post office all the clerks are too busy downing their Polar Pops and doing other things to be bothered by helping me.

Can you tell I have some not so secret animosity towards the USPS??

Actually magazines cannot be sent media mail, as they have ads in them.

I run a film/video library which ships lots of dvds per week. Yes, they CAN go media mail. However based upon some pretty extensive experience... dvds/videos sent via media mail are more likely to get delayed and lost than those sent via priority mail.

Yes - they can be sent by Media Mail.. And to avoid any further issues, go to their web site, print out the info, and bring it with you in case they give you a hard time in the future..
