Can anyone tell me about Dirk Pitt?

I'm always on the lookout for reading material for my DS15. He tends to like the series books, but has outgrown most of the ones he used to read. Would the Dirk Pitt novels be appropriate for that age?

I'm hoping to find something with enough action to be interesting, but without heavy violence or that three letter word (I think they call that "adult themes")

Is it better to start this series from the beginning and read them in order? Or can you just jump around?

And one more question - is there a site that "rates" and reviews books for kids, like they do the movies?

Any help would be appreciated!

The Dirk Pitt novels was the first "adult" series my daughter read (I loved them too). Lots of high adventure, strong bonds of friendship and loyalty, and, as far as I remember, the most romance in the books was probably a kiss.

I would recommend reading them in order, as the author does refer back to characters and events in earlier stories. It's also good to watch the main character development. And it's always fun to see where the writer will insert himself into the story.

I know my daughter was very disappointed when Mr. Cussler retired Dirk Pitt.

I'd also suggest Clive Cussler's new series - the Oregon files. The first book was The Golden Buddha.

There is some violence in the Cussler books, but it is more Dirk (and his cohort, Al) fighting the 'bad guys' rather than gratuitous 'slasher' vioence. We laugh at all that Dirk and Al go through, and still come back the next novel.

I think they'd keep a 15-yr old interested in reading.

Dirk Pitt's stories are great! Your DS will love the action adventure and mystery. There's lots of talk about cool things that they have said and done, and neat cars, boats and other toys for big boys.

I do also recommend reading them in order - he does refer back to past episodes. You should be able to get most of his series from a used book store cheaply.

Clive Cussler is one of the very few authors I will buy the hardcovers books for cause I can't wait for paperback. Sams normally gets his new releases and has them discounted to a good price when a new one comes out.

Yes the stories are cool!
Dirk Pitt is sort of like Indiana Jones with bit of James Bond suave.
To those who have read them, whats your fav story?

Yes, I would highly reccommend Clive Cussler books. I own every Dirk Pitt adventure books. There is limited violence but it does not go into graphic detail. You learn a lot about the oceans and different types of submersibles used in rescue.

I also heard they are going to make a movie based on the Sahara book does anyone know anything about this?

I've seen a list that says Iceberg was #1, but another place listed The Mediterranean Caper as #1.

Which one should we start with, and is there a place to find the real order to follow?

Mediterranean Caper was the first Dirk Pitt story, but it was not published until after 'Raise the Titantic'. My favorite is 'Night Probe'. Dirk Pitt vs. James Bond, and it had great plot twists.
