DW is doing some artwork for a local community theater. They want a sign 8 feet wide by 3 feet tall.

she has PS7, I have elements 2 and PS CS2. She converted her work to an EPS file and the company gave this response:

We need a vector file to make the size banner that Sue wants. The EPS file that is on the CD is not a vector file; it is a bitmap image saved as an
EPS.

Can you get us a true vector file (AI, EPS) of the art?

so now we are confused. once converted to an EPS isn't it an EPS?

EPS (Encapsulated PostScript) is nothing more than a language that describes mathematically the contents of a file. It can be used to describe text, vector images (such as from Illustrator) and raster (or bitmap) images. So saving a bitmap image in EPS does nothing to change the fact that it is still a bitmap image.

It is possible to convert the bitmap image into vectors using an online service like VectorMagic. However, if the source image is of a low resolution, the conversion won't look very good.

You can also recreate the artwork using an open source program Illustrator-like program such as Inkscape. It's nowhere near as powerful as Illustrator but it is a lot easier to learn.

Photoshop CS3 allows some very limited vector drawing, mostly shapes. CS2 may also have this feature, look in the help section on "Drawing".

thanks for the info and links...
