Can anyone compare the Poly and the Paradise Pier Hotel?

I am looking for someone who has been to both hotels. I see that the Paradise Pier Hotel has two queens and a day bed. Does that mean that the rooms are as big as they are at the Polynesian that also has two queens and a day bed?

Can five fit comfortably in this room?

Thanks for any input you might have!

I have stayed at both and while the Paradise Pier is a fine enough place to stay it can not compare to the Polynesian IMHO. While it has newly remodeld rooms that look nice and it has interior corridors (with slow elevators) it feels more like a moderate WDW resort. The Paradise Pier is essentially two 14 story towers that are connected. The check in area of the lobby is tiny. The lobby is a bit bland and not very big. There are not really any grounds to the resort. The hotel backs up to a parking structure. The rectangular pool is on the roof and surrounded by cement with some potted plants and trees. This was just remodeled to add a bit of a carnival theme with a roller coaster slide. The rooms anre not nearly as big as at the Polynesian but it was comfortable for the two of us. 5 would be cozy though there are some rooms next to the lightwell that are configured differently and are bigger and more interesting. There are no balconies and the windows open about an inch. The views from the back side are overe the parking structure, pool, and Anaheim suburbs. The views from the front are awesome views of the DCA theme Park, Disneyland in the distance, Anaheim and the Mountains in the background.

There is no comparison. Fitting five in rooms at the Paradise Pier would be very snug to say the least. There is only one sink in the Paradise Pier rooms, also. For five that could be difficult.

The pool area is plain and even with the slide leads a lot to be desired. We just stayed there and have stayed at moderates at WDW and it doesn't compare. It does have queen beds instead of doubles but there is little to no atmosphere and no grounds to "stroll" around.

Our preference would be the Disneyland Hotel simply because the price is typically less than the Grand Californian. The Grand Californian would somewhat compare to the Polynesian except for the fact that it is much newer and the rooms are smaller. But it is very nice. Rooms at Disneyland Hotel are bigger than Grand Californian, though, and were just remodeled. For theme and atmosphere I would go with DL or GC ... definitely not PP. If you aren't going to be on the grounds much and need a bed ... PP is okay but nothing spectacular. Fitting five in the room would be very tight, though.

Thanks for your input.

Now...given the option of DL, GC or PP or the outside hotels such as the Candy Cane Inn...which would you choose? We love the Candy Cane, and wonder if it is worth the change to stay 'on site'. You know, at WDW staying on site is a MUST in my book. How do you feel about it in California?

We have actually stayed at the Candy Cane Inn but it was almost 15 years ago. We are sold on staying onsite --even in California. We like the idea of being able to walk to everything. We enjoy downtown disney. We especially like the grounds around the DLH. I definitely wouldn't do the Paradise Pier again. But the DLH and GC are both very nice. If money isn't an issue, then I would stay at either the DLH or GC. They are both quite a bit more than what we typically pay at WDW but .... we prefer ... even though you can get a very nice off site for a lot less. (We've done the Anaheim Marriott and Anaheim Hilton -- both nice but there is just something missing.)

I would stay at the DLH over the GC because it is more "magical" for our son (6 years). The GC is very nice, though. For adults, this would probably be the better choice as it has a whole different atmosphere. Lobby is beautiful.

But the grounds at the DLH and the pool make a big difference. And, we are fans of Goofy's. Didn't care much for Storytellers at the GC. That being said the GC has the snack bar which is nice and the equivalent at the DLH isn't as nice.

For us, we pay the extra and stay Disney so I'm probably not the best one to give you an objective opinion.

I go to both WDW and DLR and live in Northern California. I love staying at the Disneyland Hotel and The Grand Californian but I usually stay at the HoJo across the street and sometimes the Candy Cane Inn. I save the big bucks for the wonderful hotels at WDW. It is up to you if you want to spend the extra money. Aside from the Grand Californian (which is more convenient than any of the WDW hotels as far as closeness to the parks) many of the offsite motels at Disneyland are just as convenient as the DLH and the Paradise Pier Hotel. But Nothing off site can compare to the atmosphere at the DLH and the GCH. Both are awesome but in different ways. The rooms at the DLH are biggest (on par with the Polyensian if you get the Sierra or Bonita tower) and the room decor is really fun but still calssy. At the GCH the rooms are about the same size as the WL and AKL and the rooms are wonderfully decorated but with hardley and Disney references. Both the DLH and GCH are great...but if you want to save money the Candy Cane is always nice.

I'm really surprised to hear the negative reviews of Paradise Pier. We're going in November (and were thinking of staying at PP), also with a party of 5 -- will DLH let 5 stay in one room...do they have rollaways? Thanks for any advise.

I really like the PP. It is a nice place to stay and the value for money compared to the other 2 onsite hotels is good too. The hotel was a Pan Pacific hotel years ago. If you are familiar with the Pan Pacific brand they have hotels throughout Asia and had a few in the US but cut back a few years ago and no longer have them.
I have stayed at the PP many times and my only complaint would be that the elevators there are LAME. Long waits. It does help to have a room on the top floors.
The plus side is that they have a private entrance to CA Adventure, rooms with views of CA Adventure - literally the hotel is right overlooking the park. And the price is usually right. The pool was just redone too I think.

As I recall the couch in our DLH room turned into a small bed. Depending on the size of the person, though, you could probably just sleep on the couch. Perhaps someone else knows for sure.

I'm not sure that there is anything horribly wrong with the Paradise Pier although we won't stay there again. They just closed the entrance to DCA that we did use while there so now you have to walk to the front of DCA to get in -- so that perk is gone. They aren't expecting to open the one from PP back up again --- too high of a cost for maintaining it --is what I heard.

The decor inside the room is ordinary -- nothing spectacular. But nothing horrible, either. Just ordinary. One thing we didn't like is that we always saw dishes in the hall from room service - they weren't good about picking them up -- no matter what time the day. Looking at stale food that has been there half a day was just not very appealing. And, we were close to the end door at the end of the hall and people would go out there and smoke. They would then prop open the door and the smoke would drift in the hall. It was like walking into a smoky bar when you were in the hall. Then we had to put a towel at our door to keep it from coming into our room. But, the room was clean just fairly plain compared with the GC and the DLH. And, it is further to walk to get to the parks, especially now since the entrance to DCA is closed. The view on the theme park side is fine. It does overlook CA and is very pretty at night. But that view does cost more. The other thing we didn't like is the fact that the windows only opened a crack. So even though you had a view you didn't have a balcony. Although there was not a balcony at DLH but the slider door did open to the outdoors which is nice depending on what time of year you do go. The GC does have balconies and they are very nice, especially in the evening. And, if you have a downtown disney or theme park view you can do a lot of people watching.

The service was nothing spectacular at PP, either. We were in concierge and felt as if we didn't get any more service than if we had paid the regular room rate except for the use of the lounge. Unfortuantely when we would go to get water, pop or juice it was usually warm and not very appealing. When we did ask for ice it took them 5-10 minutes to find some. And, then they would bring you one or two ice cubes. The lounge itself was okay but the one at DLH much better with longer hours and a very nice view of Downtown Disney and evening fireworks where they pipe in the music to go with it. Food selection, we thought, was better and more varied. At DLH they also went out of their way to "serve" you here they were just sorta there but not much more. We didn't find this to be the case at PP.

The pool hasn't really changed much since it was Pan Pacific. Square pool that they stuck some plants around. They put in a slide that is by itself and doesn't go into the pool. My DS6 liked it but prefers the pool and slide at DLH and GC better than PP. There are no "grounds" per say at PP like at GC and DLH. But the rooms are clean and have just been refurbished.

I think it will depend on what you want. If you just want a place to lay your head, I think it is fine. If you are looking for the magic we just found more of it at the DLH and the GC.

Or you can use the GCH entrance, right? I don't know if they opened that up to PPH guests during the first hour or not.

You can only use the GCH entrance as your "first" entrance of the day if you are staying at the GCH. Otherwise, anyone can go in and out via the GCH entrance after they first enter through the main gate.

That's a shame. We liked PPH, and planned to stay there again, with the private DCA enterance being our main reason for doing so. If it's going to be closed permanently we will probably stay at DLH next time.

Thanks so much for the detailed responses! You answered exactly what I wanted to know!
