When we go this fall my sons will be able to do some things on their own. They are 11,12 and 15 and if they stay together we'll let them have a *little* ;) freedom. Are we able to set it up so they can charge with a room key?

Thanks,

i'm not so sure that you still can esp. with children as young as 11. When we checked in last year and i set up our cards for charging, the CM informed us that the children's room keys could not be set up for charging.

So you might not want to count on being able to do that (or at least call to check with the resort) What about getting them a pre-loaded amex cash card or something? then they can use it anywhere.

I started giving my nephew charging privileges when he was about 14 years old. (while staying at WDW)

I set up a key with charging privileges for my 11 yr old niece at AKL last October and she was able to charge things at the parks, Mara and the store at AKL with no problem. She loved been able to charge everything!! She paid for most meals with her key.. of course, I was the one that actually paid for them ;) I gave her an allowance of $15 per day and told her that if she charged more she would lose her "charging priviledges".Just make sure you explain to them the responsability of having charging privileges and that they cannot loose the key or leave it behind in the room. We ended up having problems with our keys during that stay (had to change 3 times in 4 days), so, she didn't actually used up her daily allowance.

If you have a very responsible 11 yr old, go for it!!::yes::

Ps. She still carries the key in her wallet and loves to tell her friends that it was her DW credit card.

go figure, i must've had a cm who didn't know what they were talking about lol. i remember we used to have charging privileges when we were kids, it's good to know that they will still do it!

The CM asked if I wanted my 5 y/o to have charging priviledges on our last trip in May. I am sure your kids can.

The answer is simply, YES. Anyone getting a room key can be setup for room charging priviledges.

Things to know:
You must place a major credit card on your reservation upon check in to setup the room charging priviledges.

Be sure to let the CM that is checking you in, which cards (how many to setup)

The person carrying the card must sign their name on the back of the card, just like a credit card.

Explain the person using the card all of the responsibilities of a credit card. If this room card is lost, you need to call your resort and report this immediately so the card can be marked as invalid in the computer system and you must then pick up a new card upon arrival back at the resort. Just remember, depending on what you have your cards setup for. If they are room and charging only then you can return to the resort at your leisure. If your cards includes ticket park admission, then you can NOT leave the park you are in, you cannot get any more fast passes, of course you cannot charge anything anymore. You must return to the resort before going into another park or even back into the park you may have left not knowing you lost your card.

It's the best way to spend your time and money, you can even ask a CM at the resort to print a daily report so you can track everything done on that day and during your entire stay.

I signed everybody up for charging privilages in July....but by chance my 11yr old (who's card would have said jr) picked up the card for my 6yr old (says child) and signed it....So, he used it...Though at the Magic Kingdom he did have a problem. The CM said he couldn't charge because it was a child's card. I wasn't with him so I couldn't discuss it. I did talk to the CM at the desk at the Wilderness Lodge and they said if the children every have problems they should ask for the CM to call the front desk of the hotel to have it verified.....Which in theory is great...but I don't think my kids would speak up like that....

You have actually picked up on an interesting side of this situationan and I totally forgot this side of the story.

One thing regarding your challenge is that maybe the CM thought that your 11 yr old was older than a child card and that might have been a signal for the CM to make such a statement. Remember the charging cards are like Credit Cards, they may have just wanted to verify that some other person (child) didn't find the card and wanted to try and charge.

Something you can do when you think that your child might not want to call back to the resort is upon Check In with the concierge desk or any desk is ask the CM to give you a resort business card with the phone numbers on it and explain a little more that this is important just in case you need to call, there seem be alot of CMs asking for parents lately and I can only think that maybe they are getting direction from mgr's and security because of some other instance that may be occuring in the merchandise locations. I know kids don't usually want to use confrontation but in this case I would have. If this happens again do you think that the kids would feel comfortable just simply saying, "Thank you, May I speak to your Manager?". That question usually turns things around or turns a light on for some CMs. Certain things have even happened to me and that question usually gets action.

A point to note: You cannot have the children's card have a lesser limit than what you have.

For example, we were at the WL in November and I gave my 13yo DS charge privileges on his card, but I wanted it to have a lesser limit. They said they couldn't do it, so he walked around for almost a week with a $1500 limit on his card - but I didn't tell him that.

I had him save all receipts, and I checked them daily, and you can also request a copy of your bill from the front desk and check against that.

FYI - he came thru with flying colors, and had a ball charging his own food, etc.

RetiredCM : I am going with my friend and our 2 sons. Can we each put cash or a credit card down for our seperate cards? We are staying in one room but want to be able to use the key cards for charging.

You might be able to. When my family went last year my sister was 13 and I was 16. The CM's at the front desk left the decision up to my dad weather or not to give us charge cards. He did and it added to the "Magic" at the happiest place on earth.

I would love to know the answer to this too. We are going in a few weeks with my friend and her son. Would be a lot easier if we could each have our own credit cards to our own cards. We will also be staying in the same room.

I need to know this also. My son and daughter-in-law are going with us and it would be great if we could each use our own credit card to secure the resort charging privledges.
