Can anybody tell me about Charlotte, NC?

We have lived in Indian Trail (Union County) for over a year now and we absolutely LOVE it!!! We moved into Union County from Mecklenburg County, about 15 minutes "down the road". We have 2 DDs, and 1 will be starting school next year, so we wanted to make sure that we were established in a new county before she started. The schools in Union County are wonderful (Circle of Excellence Schools). We had originally started looking in Cabarrus County, but lost our house due to contingency. When it was time to look again, we decided to look in Union County. So if you want to be close to Charlotte, but keep your taxes low and stay in a great school system, then you can't go wrong with Cabarrus or Union County.

My husband grew up in Concord, NC (Cabarrus County) and I finished high school there. I don't know if other Cabarrus County schools are better, but I wouldn't call Concord schools "good".

It's a fine place to live, I suppose, but there is a lot of sprawl and general lack of character. You can get a lot for your money (not as much as you used to, though), but that can be good and bad. I mean, my husband's parents just sold their BEAUTIFUL 4500 square foot tudor home on threee acres of perfectly manicured property for less than we bought our 1980 square foot (not NEARLY as "nice/luxurious") home on about 1/4 acre. You think, wow, that's great. But at the same time, every time I'm there I just feel that I get sucked into this culture of consumerism. I mean, I don't NEED a 4000+ square foot home. I don't think I would be any happier a person if I had it. Instead, I would spend more money to FILL it! I would believe that I NEEDED a table to sit at some wall that will never do anything at all -- except maybe hold a vase that may or may not contain flowers. You know what I mean?

The weather is great, though! I grew up in VT, and now live in MA, and while I LOVE it in the northeast most of the year, I could do without January through most of April altogether. It's so nice to go to a park in NC in February on a bright, 65 degree day and the ground is not sopping, and you can really enjoy yourself!

Anyways, good luck with your decision! I'm sure you'll adjust to wherever you end up!

I've posted before about Gaston Co., NC. We are 20 minutes SW from Charlotte/Douglas airport. Lower taxes, lower crime, decent schools and affordable home prices. I am 2 hours from skiing in NC mountains, 3 hours from either Gatlinburg, Tenn. or Charleston, SC., 4 hours from Savannah, Ga., 4 1/2 hours from Myrtle Beach, SC and about 9 1/2 hours from WDW. These are all places that we visit each year. I really do prefer living here as opposed to Charlotte, but it's nice to be able to go to Charlotte for events, etc...I think you would like this area and this state. Good luck.

Our family may be relocating to Charlotte, NC & I am in desperate need of input.

What areas are better? Can you tell me about the schools (kids currently in 4th & 7th)? How are car insurance, property taxes & homeowners insurance rates?

Anything you could tell me (including "don't do it") would be greatly appreciated!
Don't do it! We moved to TN last July and really miss NJ. We were from Pt. Pleasant. I love the north. Miss the friendly people and the beach and all the good restaurants and fresh produce. Just be sure to visit fo and extended time before you decide. The only thing I like better is the weather. It 's alot slower here and that gets frustrating sometimes. The taxes are cheaper but you will pay tax on your food and clothes and that adds up quite a bit every time you go shopping. It's over 9%.

I don't know much about Charlotte but it is a lovely city. The homeowners in TN is about the same price as NJ, we are right near Knoxville. Good luck with your decision.
