Can a personal item be a backpack(Airtran)

I'm flying Airtran in Oct. Their carry-on policy allows one carry on item and one personal item. Can the personal item be a backpack? Specifically a high school size backpack.

The personal item needs to fit entirely under the seat in front of you. If it's that small, or if it not packed so full that it can't be manipulated into the space, then yes, it's permissible.

I take a carry on suitcase and a backpack and have never had an issue so you should be fine
