Camping with new puppy - need info

We are coming to the Fort mid July and we have a 8 week old yellow lab. He will be 10 weeks during our stay. I have lots of questions...We are in a pet loop.

1 - Is there a minimum age for the kennel? We only plan to take him the days we absolutely can't get back every few hours.

2- Do you need to reserve the kennel?

3- What vaccinations do they need?

4- Any other helpful hints or suggestions are welcome!

don't think there is a minumum age. But all shots have to be current. You also have to take him out to potty while he is at the kennel.

You might want to check with the fort first.
Generally speaking campgrounds and anyplace that has dogs
gatherings or interactions require rabies and bordetella shots records.
Normally Rabies shot is not administered before 16 weeks of age.
Ask your vet at your next shots appointment.
Also you might want to keep in mind the age it will
be at time of travel.
You probably haven't had the dog more then a couple of weeks right now,
and he is starting to learn the routine of the housebreaking, the rules of the house, and dynamics of your family. A trip at this time will be a step back
on the learning process, unless you would be able to keep the routine very
similar. A big commitment on a Disney vacation.
The positive side of the coin is that you will have a lot of opportunities to have him interact with available strangers, and give him a good imprint in this area, which is the one that later in life has the biggest problems, since we live in a human habitat and not canine one. Consider that you will be in the happiest place on Earth, and if you take your puppy out for walks and bring some little treats, you could asks strangers to greet your puppy and feed him a treat after he sits for them, for example. You would accomplish 2 things right away; have the dog learn the sit, and give him good experiences with strangers. A win-win situation.

There is no minimum age, but puppies that are too young to have their Rabies vaccination yet are kept in a separate room, away from the other dogs.

They must have a current Bordetella vaccination.

Keep in mind that the Kennel does not walk them either. You will still have to come back every few hours (or couple of hours for a puppy) to bring him for a walk. If you leave him in there too long, and he has an accident, it may make his housetraining more difficult -- a step back like DocBrown said.

Another thing to keep in mind with a puppy is -- if you leave him alone in the trailer/motorhome, he may be scared and bark. If it bothers the neighbors, FW security could make you leave him in the kennel instead. Maybe you can try him out at home! Leave him in the trailer in your driveway periodically, so he gets used to it!

if you have a hard sided camper and a crate keep him there. turn on the tv and a/c and check on him every few hours. dogs can pick up kennel cough and/or parvo. both are not fun to deal with.

i know k.c. can be picked up by a dog sniffing floors where a dog that is a carrier has been. they can also get it by sniffing nose to nose. just be careful. make sure your dog is completely vaccinated before taking it to a kennel, pet store, dog park.. in fostering dogs are kept seperate from our dogs for 10 days. just to be sure they're aren't carrying anything.

i looked back on my records and my last pups vaccines went kind of like this.
my dogs are bichons. so, they are smaller in size and the vaccines might be different for a large breed. but, here it is.

born on 11/20/05

dhllp and dewormed on 01/02/06

dhllp on 01/27/06

dhllp on 02/13/06 (this was the one year)

rabies on 03/22/06 (also 1 year).

after his first year we could do the 3 yr vaccines. i like to wait until 6 months to be safe for kenneling. personal opinion.

i keep my dogs in our camper as i said above. we have never had a problem with them making too much noise. i think in pet loops people kind of expect a little noise..

Hello,
We brought our Golden Retriver down when she was just a pup. Maybe 10 weeks old. We kept her in a crate in the camper. She was such a trooper. This worked very well for her and I do say she has great social skills so I wonder if what docbrown wrote is why she gets along so well with others.

When we got our dog, we waited a few months to take him walking around other dogs per the vet's advice. This may have had something to do with the vaccination schedule. With a dog that young, I would check with your vet but think having the dog in the kennel is probably not a good idea at his age.

I just wanted to say enjoy your new puppy. Our yellow lab will be 8 this fall and she LOVES to go camping. We don't bring her with us to the Fort because it is such a long trip and I would hate to leave her for long periods while we are at the parks. She is better off at home with her grandparents coming to take care of her. We are lucky for that.


I agree with the others about making sure your pup has all her shots. If you have a hard sided trailer it would be best to keep her in there in a kennel.

Thank you to everyone for your advice. We do have a class A rv so we will probably keep him there for reasonable amounts of time. We were thinking about doing a waterpark and thought about the kennel that day. I called them and they said they will walk puppies because they are so young.

We saw the vet today and she said it was fine. She gave him all the necessary vaccinations.

When I spoke with the kennel they strongly recommended a reservation but I may not know until 2 days before. Do you think I will have a problem getting in?

It really depends on when you go. The only time I ran into a problem was when we were the in April and we eneded up having to go to Epcot's kennel and that was for Saturday & Sunday. The rest of the week was kinda hit and miss with them. I will say FW Kennel was very busy.
