I love Christmas in WDW! I went last year with the whole family, and think I burned everyone out. So now that I have a new truck camper, I thought I'd give a solo camping trip a try, either this December or next. I have no problem doing vacations sans family, but this is a long driving trip from MA, and was wondering if anyone has ever undertaken such a trip solo, and what were your experiences and advice? I'll be posting this on the camping board as well, but I figured more solo travelers check out this board.

I camp solo all the time in my TT and used to do it in a tent Solo as well. Just make safe decisions on where you stop on your way down.Good Sam, KOA etc. are best bets...never done the truck stop over night as a solo and don't think I would. I'd suggest you get a new campers guide to take with your for your new camper or go though AAA. They can give you trip books that tell you where the good parks are on the way down and even deign a trip tix book for you outlining your trip from start to finish including areas that are under construction! I'd never used them for the camping part of my travels before last year and found them a great source..Woodalls VS Fromers is my suggestion for a guide to buy with campground listings!!!Janet princess:

Thanks, Janet. I know some folks had suggested the Flying J truckstops, and was thinking about it, but I think I'd be more secure in a CG. Have you ever stayed in the Florence, SC KOA? It seems to be recommended more than others by folks on this board.
Oh, just read where you're from...doubtful you'd have any reason to stop in that particular campground. :teeth:

I've only stayed in one KOA facility..it was ok but not near as nice as others I've stayed in...but you are only going to go there to sleep and then hurry on to your destination so no worries...it was also a few dollars more than I had been used to spending but still less than a hotel...25 a night 4 years ago...more than that is silly for a campgound unless its Fort Wilderness!!! Have a great time! I wish I was on my way myself...alas I have to wait until the end of Sept for my first of two trips this year....feel free to ask anything else.I've camped all my life in the deep words and road side so I'm def. a vet camper!!! Janet

What about camping when at WDW? I'm eager to try out the tent-butt for my vehicle, and I wondered if anyone else had tried a site at Fort Wilderness Campground solo?

If I do this, would I be better off close to a comfort station (for when nature calls during the wee hours), or it is safer/more quiet away from those areas?

(Sorry to tag on, here, but I read the adult/solo board pretty much exclusively, and hadn't thought to check the others.)

Thanks,

I have never felt safer camping at Fort Wilderness Solo!!!!There are often CM around at all hours who QUIETLY ride around to make sure things stay quiet during quiet time and to see for any needs that pop up for those who come in late or look as if they shouldn't be there in the first place. I prefer to camp near comfort stations myself..You are lucky to live so close by!! AND you will love the Fort..its clean and quiet when compared to other parks...ENJOY!

can give no advice on the camping....

but your weight loss is very, very impressive!!!!

good for you!!!

what system has worked for you?

djblu883, thanks for confirming my thoughts about the campground. I've spent more than one day walking through the grounds and admiring soe of the displays from longtime Disney RV travelers -- Halloween and Christmas are both fun.

I'll look at my options, then figure out a time I can go there.

you are most welcome dear and I hope you have a magical time...I've been at both times and enjoyed Christmas time better myself though if you want reservations you batter book now as they are already out FAST...I've had mine booked for 2 months now and I'm not giving them up until the last day I have to....you never know when planning with friends if they will back out...and I'm not gonna cancel my trip for any reason lolol!! Good luck and have a blast!

Thanks, Pat, I've been on Weight Watchers core plan since February. Just lost another 4 lbs at weigh-in this week. Some of it is dehydration (man, it was hot today!), but at least 2 lbs of it was legit.

djblu883 -- how did you get started solo tent camping? i'd like to try camping but have some concerns. So far I've talked my sister into going twice but I suspect the set-up aspect would be easier if I were alone (she isn't exactly organized). The other part of the problem is that I know my mom would be concerned if I go alone (she's concerned when I've gone with sis)

editoria -- what's a tent-butt?

I got started simply because I have always loved it..my kids grew up and wouldn't go with Mom any more and my soulmate was in an accident and I no longer had him to go with me...I learned then that life is short and can change in seconds and we all need to live live to the fullest....sooooo since camping is one of my most fav things to do I started out going places on my motorcycle where I knew others were going to be that I knew...then from there I just kept venturing out...always in public places that have good security ...plus Mr. Smith and Mr. Wesson always go along on any trip I take...It would be crazy not to have those "friends" along...and the training that goes along with them!!!! If you are thinking of tenting in Disney I really don't think you have anything to worry about....there are LOTS of staff roaming the area at all hours...and a scream would bring others to your aide quickly I'd think since it is a family park ....enjoy and good luck...PS many RV parks also have cabins that can be rented for reasonable rates..those have LOCKS on the doors... :cool1: princess: :joker:

I don't think I'll be traveling with your buds but it certainly would be a good idea to come up with a more staid friend of my own that I would be comfortable with. And yes I agree life is short which is why I'm pursuing this activity.

PS. I wasnt concerned with FW...so many people about...but I don't want to practice camping in FW. And oh the objective is tent camping rather than cabin camping. I wouldn't have a problem using a cabin.

the great thing about tent camping is you can hear and smell nature..the GREAT outdoors is awesome! I'm wanting to tent camp in Nova Scotia...the last two years my kids have managed to change those plans....maybe next year!!

BTW ladies I camp solo all year now...I travel for work and instead of doing the hotel thing...I take my travel trailer..Good luck and happy trails!!! Janet
