Camping in a thunderstorm?

We have a Pop Up and we have camped in thunderstorms before, but now I'm wondering if that's a safe thing to do. Should we be hanging out in my minivan in a storm in stead? ANy thoughts on which types of camping equipment is OK to be in during a storm? I know a C or A would be fine, but what about tents, PUPs, and TT's? Thoughts?

I don't have an answer for you, but wanted to say I know what you mean... 2 summers ago we were (tent) camping and during the night a thunderstorm came up. At first I was just laying there listening to the storm around me (I love hearing a good thunderstorm) and then I thought.. wait a minute... we are essentially laying on the ground under TREE"s during a lightening & thunder storm! are we crazy? right about then, the storm passed over, but I was seriously considering getting DH & the kids up and moving to the van till the storm passed!

I can't say about a pup. We stay in our TT during storms. I figure it's about the same danger as being in a vehicle.

We have stayed in our pop-up during thunderstorm exactly *once*. It was last summer. it came up very fast and i had just shooed Christian into the PUP. OMG, this storm was so bad! Golf ball size hail was pouring down and all we had to hide in was our Jeep ragtop, not exactly safe. Besides the hail would have probably knocked one of us out just getting to the Jeep. It was so loud on the PUP we couldn't even hear ourselves talk. just hung on for dear life. When it was over and we exited the PUP, we saw a tree about 9 ft from the PUP--it was split clean down the middle like someone had attacked it with an axe. I think we were very VERY lucky.
