Has anyone used these? We are going camping this weekend for my daughter's birthday and I'm trying to come up with meal options that don't involve a lot of cooking. I'm thinking of getting the cast iron pie/sandwich maker.

If anyone has used these, what are some of the recipes you have used? Something besides the normal bread/meat/cheese and pie filling type of thing.

Ohh I used to make “campfire pies” all the time as a kid. My favorite was always peanut butter and jelly, pretty basic, but so good. We always did the normal meat and cheese/pie filling ones so I can’t help with any more creative ideas :/

Buy them now because most of them need to be "pre-seasoned".
We made Pizza sandwiches this summer with them. Go online and search- you'll get all kinds of ideas!

adding: used Pillsbury Pizza dough, not bread and paper toweled vegetable oil on the cast iron plates

My husband still goes on about the "hobo pies" they made in boy scouts years ago!
White bread and the canned pie filling of your choice!

Good ole PB and J
It was fun but the novelty wore off for my kids so we only used them a couple times.
We started doing foil packet meals after that.

That's all I've used is the bread ones-tuna and cheese, ham and cheese, pizza, canned cherries and chocolate. I think they are kind of limited in types of cooking you can do. Maybe others have different ideas.

We called them Tonka pies when I was a kid, and we used canned pie filling and if IRC, we used buttered white bread for the crusts. Yum!

I’ve never devoted an entire weekend’s camping menu to using a CI pie iron but sounds like a nice challenge, :-) .

I’ve fried homemade corned beef hash with a waffle iron using ghee (clarified butter) so the potatoes are really crispy; made vegetable and canned fish fritters on it, as well as johhnie cakes, panni sandwiches and hand pies.

A manual waffle iron has a bigger cooking surface than a camping pie iron so its easier to make a meal for more than one person at a time.

Here’s a waffle iron recipe that could readily be used for a CI pie iron instead:

I always have trouble finding an electrical outlet in the middle of the woods to use a waffle iron, LOL.

We called them Mountain Pies. I don't even know if I've ever eaten a sandwich from one. Always bread and apple or cherry pie filling.

Now I want one to make me a Mountain Pie.

We call them Hobo Pies. As far as not cooking a lot while camping, I agree. It seems you are either cooking a meal or cleaning up from a meal when camping. The more you can prep at home the better. Marinate some chicken and freeze it. Make a couple pumpkin or banana breads and freeze. Chop onions and peppers before you leave and put in a ziplock to serve with sausage. Do a dump meal. I called one of mine TexMex. Can of corn, can of black beans, can of diced tomatoes, taco sauce packet, can of diced chilis, anything else you want. Heat it up and serve with tortilla scoops. Prep, prep prep! More time for fun.

Steaks and burgers. Egg whites. Hash browns. Bacon. What’s important is having a good cooler. We use a Walmart knock off a Yeti. It’s half as much and works as good. Cabela also makes a knock off too that’s just as good.

For cooking, we’ll use the grills available at the campsite. We’ll use a Coleman one for the burners.

Growing up we used them at home as well as camping for grilled cheese sandwiches. I didn;t know they could be used for anything else until I was an adult. Lol. I made hand pied with them a last year. They were so-so. I know others make pizzas and a variety of sandwiches in them.

For a weekend camping trip, a bucket of KFC works great. Cast iron waaaay too much work for a weekend trip.
