camping and hurricanes

We are planning our first camping trip to Ft. Wilderness in 11 days. Have any of you ever been caught in Ft. Wilderness during tropical force winds? We live on the NC coast and have been through way to many hurricanes and tropical storms to count, I can not imagine being in our camper (31ft Jayco) under those conditions, I'm sure if it truly looked like it was coming here or there we would cancel our trip, but I was just curious if any of you had ever been in that situation and if so what do you do?

during hurricane type situations Fort Wilderness is usually closed and guests are relocated to other resorts until the storm passes.

We were there during a hurricane two years ago in October. There were no special provisions made for FW guests at that time. We were also at FW a few years back (perhaps someone can remember the year, but I think it was 98') when a tornado hit in February. We had a 30' Jayco TT at the time and it was really rocking, but we fared okay. We did all the usual precaution stuff like take down the awning, but a lot of other people did not do so good. The joke at the time was that the people at FW must be expendable, because FW personnel did not do anything to warn guests or to suggest where to "hide-out" for safety. Perhaps they too were caught totally off-guard, but there was really no preparation by WDW staff.

I was told by a busdriver back in Aug, when I asked the same question, that, if the weather was bad enough, the campers would be put in conference centers in the bigger on site hotels. He said to bring your blankets and pillows, because you'd be sleeping on the floor! (I personally can't imagine leaving my dog behind.) I'm surely it rarely gets that bad, but doesn't sound like much fun...

I was there during a hurricane warning. It was 4 years ago I believe. We were in a wilderness home and they put us over in the allstars. The communication was so poor. My husband and 1year old DS were doing laundry and I was at the magic kingdom with my older two. They notified him with a note under the door. He was expected to be out asap. Everyone was told to go to the front and they would be told where to go from there. Needless to say it took them well over 2 hours to get through the crowd. In the meantime I was stuck with no way back and not knowing where to go. The had stopped transportation back to the campground and my husband still didn't know where we would end up. So I sat and waited and waited at the Poly where we said we would meet up. I know they were extenduating circumstances but I just felt like communication could have been better. The hurricane was a miss but it took quite a while for things to return to normal the next day.
