Camping and dogs

You can always tell people who own little dogs as they thing anything over 20lbs is big. BIG dogs people think we have little dogs.

Oh my gosh, that sounds like me. I am always referring to my daughter's dog as being big. He weighs around 35 pounds. My dog is under 20 pounds. She is constantly telling me her dog is NOT big. LOL! I guess she's right, it's just that he looks so big compared to my fluff ball!

Our monster of 13 years (a Pomeranian), always traveled with us & loved it. Unfortunalely she passed away earlier this year and we finally got another.

She won't be traveling with us for our October trip (housebreaking, chewing everything in sight) and will be staying with our daughter.

She's adorable!

301 & 61, sounds big to me.

30 pounds and 6 pounds. Apparently I can't tell the difference between a 1 and l. But anyway, our cocker spaniel gets really excited when we tell him we are going to WDW. He is a barker at home, but as soon as we get in the MH he doesn't bark. When we tell him we are going home, he gets really upset. This was the first trip for our 6 pound maltipoo, we just got him from a rescue shelter in July, and he had a great time. They both love being walked all the time. It is great that we can bring them.

She is so cute. Our newest addition, Tigger a maltipoo, was much better in the MH than at home.

Our dog is 125 pounds and always loved the popup and now loves the hybrid! However, we never leave him alone in either because I'm too paranoid he might fall out of the bunk or something. I know this would probably never happen since it would require him to move but still...

We have left him in our tow vehicle (camper van) for short periods of time like for the sing along or fireworks on the beach and he did just fine. We did put a movie in the DVD player for him

saw this question on a different thread but did not see an answer.

If you are at a pet site and can you have your dog outside on a tether with you? or do you have to have a pen?

I asked this earlier-our Shih Tzu is happy on a tether but goes nuts in a pen/crate-and was told that it was fine.

(ETA: I only asked about times when we would be at the campsite. I don't know about leaving them unattended. Jackie weighs less than 15 pounds and will just snooze in the camper while we're gone.)

We too recently lost our last pet sitter when our daughter left for med school. We can bring him to "Grandma and Grandpa's" but decided that, since Ft. Wilderness is pet friendly, we'll bring him with us this time. Jack the Shih Tzu is going to Disney World!

Our dog loves to camp, we can't say camp, camper or camping in our house. We have to spell it out or she is ready to go.

We are in big trouble when she learns to spell.

All we have to do is start the MH and Elmo, our cocker spaniel, is ready to go. He gets so excited. In answer to the question about tethering your dog outside. It's fine as long as you are with him/her, but you can't leave them unattended. Now that doesn't mean that you can't run inside to get something, just don't stay inside with your pet outside. Also, our dogs are crate trained at home, so we just bring their crates with us. When we leave, the disney channel is on.

As long as you're at the site, a pen or tether is perfectly fine. We do some combination of both for our gang. Bz prefers to be on the tether sitting in "her" chair, which Lyn will play in the pen all day if we're there. Brady bounces around like a ping pong ball, but usually ends up in the camper after a while.

Also, our dogs are crate trained at home, so we just bring their crates with us. When we leave, the disney channel is on.

Same here (see "doggie dorm on previous page") Crates were especially good in the hybrid - our gang moves a bit TOO much and would certainly have fallen out. ;)

But even now - to keep them from bouncing from window to window and barking at everything in sight - they'll be crated when we're gone... with the fan going and the Disney channel on their TV. :upsidedow

This thread has answered all my questions I had. We will be going in April.

We actually have an ex-pen that we put up against our TT. We have netting and smaller ex-pen against the TT so the little dog does not escape underneath. my 40lb BC and 14lb Mini Aussie will stay in the TT when we are gone. I may put up the tent end when we go to the park for an extended period(more then an hour).

Our Jackie is miserable in a crate or pen (He's convinced his groomer to give him free run of her office on spa day!) so I'm glad we can tether him while we're outside cooking or relaxing :)

(Only 32 days till we're at Ft. Wilderness!)

It's all about knowing your dogs.

For instance, this is where our dogs prefer to hang out when we're at the site with them...

BradyBz12,

I've seen the pictures of your beautiful borders. We have one too-Annie. She's 15 and the best dog we've ever owned but doesn't travel well. She spends her "vacation" with a friend who brings her to work every day.

We've always taken our dogs to obedience training (Well until Jackie-I figured I could handle a 15 pound Shih Tzu!) and Annie is the only one who was ever expelled. She was in beginner obedience but the agility class was next door and we couldn't keep from running over to play too!

I have a newish laptop. I'll see if hubby has any pictures of his baby.

 Yeah, that sounds about right.

We were total newbies with our first BC 10 years ago. We actually believed the dumb trainer that told us our puppy was "dog aggressive" because she was crouching/staring at every dog in class.

We soon found out that BCs crouch/stare at EVERYTHING that moves. :upsidedow

Love to see pics of your Annie if you can post them. :)
