campgrounds in Williamsburg, VA

Thanks for all the information. We will be leaving this Saturday and arriving in Williamsburg at American Heritage on Sunday. I haven't spent nearly as much time planning as I usually do but would appreciate some info.
1) tell me the best route to take from N. Alabama
2) What attractions do we need to be sure to do? We want to stay away from the "tourist" traps and stick with authentic, historical sites.

Williamsburg is one of the few places that doesn't have any "tourist traps". Anything in the historic area is run by Colonial Williamsburg. Make sure you take an evening just to walk DOG street (Duke of Gloucester). We find it a great way to walk off dinner every night. The ghost tours are a fun thing to do too. Whether an official CW evening program or by an independent company. Gambols at Chownings in the evening is great too. I never tire of watching the trades folk work and listening to them tell about life in the 1700's. My kids grew up going there almost yearly, and still love it 23 and 28 years later.

Just got back from a weekend at the Williamsburg KOA. I wasn't so sure about it when we pulled in, but we ended up loving it. Tons of kids riding bikes and plenty of shade. Next time I think we will try to get in section B as it is a little more shaded and private. It was Memorial Day weekend, so it was jam packed, but we plan on returning when it is less busy. We have season passes to Busch Gardens and it was an easy drive.

We have also stayed at American Heritage and enjoyed it. Nice playground and great nature trail.

Avoid Anvil. We left after one night of trains roaring by our heads. Cute park and nice people, but we got NO sleep.

You have helped me out numerous times with campground recommendations in various parts of the southeast. Now I need a another rec.- My family wants to travel to Williamsburg this summer. We would like to stay at a home-owned, home-operated campground in the area. I've seen several when I search on Google, but I would like to have some first-hand experience from the experts on this board. Thanks for your help.

Why not check out Newport News City Park at Deer Run. About 15 min or less from Williamsburg. They have campsites and is located on the main road to Williamsburg (Jefferson Blvd) and easy access to I-64. (entrance is right outside entrance to park). It is on a reservoir so they have canoeing and paddleboats, fishing. There is also an awesome public golf course there as well.

When you get into Delaware, get off 95 and head down RT 896. Pick up 301 and stay on 301 across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. When you get to Port Royal, turn left on RT 17 and take that to Saluda, turn right on RT 33 and follow that to RT 64. You'll have a few traffic lights to deal with, but the speed limit on 17 is 55 and there is virtually no traffic. Beats the heck out of sitting in the inevitable traffic jam on 95 in MD or VA.

I 2nd this we take this all the time. My sister lives in Glouscester, the only
traffic we hit is Waldorf.
