Campground for overnight

Some friends of ours will be driving from the Atlanta area to WDW in a few weeks and asked me to recommend a campground that they could stop at to rest (probably an hour or so into Florida on I-75). We always just stop at a rest area, but they have small children and want a campground. Any recommendations?

tell them they don't need to stop. that's a short drive. my dad drove us kids from wisconsin to chattanooga, tn in one day. we knew to behave or the van was stopping.

just kidding. but, really we did drive all that way. probably why we drive all that way now .

go on line and check out koa's. there has to be some of those along the way.

Eh, they may be leaving after work in the evening and want to get a few hours down the road!!

I don't know too much about campgrounds in Florida, although there seem to be many of them along the interstate.

There are two VERY nice ones just north of the Georgia border at Exit 5. Eagles Roost, and the KOA.

We usually stop in Ocala at Ocala Rv resort its the exit by Cracker Barrel. Its a nice campground and has been around for many years. Its about 1 1/2 hr drive to the Fort.

I will second the recommendation on Eagle Roost. It's a nice stopover for a trip to the Fort. We arrived after dark in a driving rainstorm last spring. I called ahead without a reservation and they told me just to find an open spot and pay in the morning, which i did. Very accomodating folks.

The Valdosta KOA does not allow more than four people on a site, which means if your friends have more than two kids, they are not welcome.

This really surprised me, for a KOA. I often stay at KOAs for my three DDs.

Hey! Who are you calling whimpy??? Where was it that I met you for the first time? In a rest area in Georgia...just a few hours from my house! LOL! We always leave after Toby gets off of work, drive until he gets tired, and then stop in a rest area.

Thanks for all the recommendations. My friends have changed their plans and will be going somewhere else for a few days before WDW. I'm going to write down all of your suggestions in case I can convince my husband that there are other places to stay on the way to WDW instead of a rest area!

the stephen foster state park is a great stop just outside of Lake City.

We have stopped there many times and it is nice.

The Jennings Outdoor Resort is the first exit inside Fl. Although it is more than an hour and a half from the Fort, it is convenient, surprisingly quiet to be so close to the interstate, and we also arrived late at night after calling ahead without a reservation, with no problem at all. We were told to just pick out a site that we liked, and we paid the next morning. Pet friendly, and a very friendly staff. I would recommend it to anyone.

Thanks for the recommendations. I'm amazed that these campgrounds just let you pay in the morning. I guess they know that campers are honest people!

We always stop at the In & Out Campground near the I-75/US 90 interchange (east on 90 about a half mile). It's got the cheapest gas we have found, propane available, near a Super WalMart, lots of fast foods available, etc. Subway and ice cream on site. We also usually leave the Atlanta area up in the day, so this makes for a convenient place to stop. Then it's a reasonable drive (150 miles) to the Fort for a mid-day check-in the next day.

Hi Neighbor! We were just in Stone Mountain a week or so ago...Yellow Daisy Festival! Bought a real cute sign for the RV there!

We like to stay at the Valdosta KOA when we head down to the Keys or the
Panhandle. This year we will be leaving on Dec 9th to Disney for our first stay
at Ft Wilderness and will be staying at the Valdosta KOA on the 9th.

Haven't been to Yellow Daisy in years even though we live within sight of the Mountain. Haven't been to the Mountain since Silver Doller took over. But we've increased our trips to Gatlinburg and Orlando as well as a few irv2 national rallies. Couldn't have gotten to the Mountain today. We live on the wrong side of the mud slide.

Highway 90 at I 75 is at Lake City FL. It's about 100 miles from the Turnpike and another 50 to the Fort.

I second this place. It is great for an overnight stop and very affordable. We have stayed there a couple of times and would stay again if we travel with family. If it is just us, we leave early am and are at The Fort early pm. Though I think this trip might have a few more stops thanks to new BP medicine.... My husband said I could just ride in the 5th wheel...
