Hi, can anyone recommend a campground that is relatively close to Highway 78 (Birmingham) or Hwy 20 between Birmingham & Atlanta or South on Hwy 75?

We are traveling from Oklahoma with Fort Wilderness as our destination.
We will have been traveling all day and are just looking for a clean safe place for a night. We will want to get back on the road first thing in the morning so no pool or fancy amenities needed.

Thanks so much for your help. I really apprecaite everyone's wisdom & insight :earsboy:

Ooops. Sorry I just realized you wanted something between Birmingham and Atlanta. I'm not familiar with any of the campgrounds between here and Birmingham. Sorry.

Try Red Top Mountain State Park.

It is just a bit south of intersection of Hwy 20 on I75 South near cartersville. It has it's own exit.

We stay there all the time.

go to www.lakeloganmartin.com and view Lakeside Landing campground.
It is about 5 miles off I-20 in Pell City, AL which is about 40 min East of Bham and 1.5 hours West of Atlanta. The sites are pull thrus, they have a bath house. They are on the lake so I don't think they have a pool. I have never stayed there but drive past it several times per day. They always have a good number of campers. This weekend is NASCAR at Talladega so I hope you aren't coming this way this weekend.
Also, we don't travel thru Atlanta anymore to go to FW. We think it takes longer. We go thru Montgomery, AL then thru Dothan, etc and hit I-10 in FL or this trip we are traveling Hwy 280 thru Alabama to GA then getting on the South GA HWY(?-have to look that one up) to FL.

I agree with LMC, going through Montgomery and Dothan to I-10 is much faster than going through Atlanta.

Well I figure why travel 1 1/2 to 2 hours due east with no southerly direction at all when you can find another route that is going south and east at the same time!

I second Lakeside Landing in Pell City. Very nice folks running it.

Also try Oak Mountain State Park just outside of Birmingham. Beautiful area.

Oak Mtn SP would be great if you decide to take I65 to Montgomery then US Hwy 231 thru Dothan to FL.

Just a quick comment on going through Atlanta- If you are going to have to go through there anytime anywhere near rush hour 7am-10am or 4pm-7pm avoid it at all costs!! We live near the Ga/AL border near I-20 and I can't tell you how many times we have been stuck in traffic in Atlanta on a trip. If you can go a different way I would recommend it. Also regarding campgrounds, I've driven by lakeside landings and it looks ok- never stayed there but very close to hwy, there is also a place that I think is called Dogwood rv at the talladega exit- looks like it's easy to get to- we have stayed at Oak mtn, it is very nice.

I have tried the Montgomery, then Dothan route a couple of times and it doesn't save me any time over going through Atlanta and it KILLS your gas mileage. (And with the cost of gas nowadays, cruising at 75 mph without stopping is preferable to 45-55 and stops)

When we drive, we always leave North Alabama about 5:30pm, and that puts us through Birmingham about 7pm CT and Atlanta about 10:00 pm ET, then we continue on to about Macon or Tifton and stop for the night there.

The only campground I know of is one near Six Flags on I-20. There is also a Boy Scout camp off 431 South just east of Birmingham, but that's probably not what your looking for :-)
