cameras at the airport?

okay this might be a dumb question, but better safe than sorry...

are digital camcorders okay to go through the x-ray machine at the airport? how about the videotapes that go in them? i've never traveled with my camera before and am very nervous.

Don't pack them in your checked luggage.

Make sure your camera is easy to get to - last month they made me take my digital video camera out of the camera bag and place it in it's own bin to go through the scanner. They didn't require that for the regular digital camera, just the video camera - not sure why, but they did it at both ACY and MCO. I would never place my cameras in checked luggage - too valuable to loose and sometimes they really throw those suitcases around !

Yep. For some reason, the TSA treats camcorders the same as laptop computers. They must be removed from their bag and placed into a bin -- by themselves -- for the trip through the x-ray machine.

The x-rays do not hurt the camcaorders or the magnetic media.

drat - i already buried my camcorder in a mound of clothes in my suitcase. hmmm, maybe i'll move it to my backpack to make it easier to get to. thanks for the heads up!
