Camera strap

Hey Anne, I know you have a Tracy Joy bag. She had some cute wrist straps, and I almost ordered one, but I wasn't sure if I'd like it either. Although, I'd say about 90 % of the time I am holding the camera in my hand with the neck strap wrapped around my arm. It's a good question...I'm curious too...

Love mine. Absolutely LOVE it. Best $40 in a long time.
I wouldn't use it for something like Disney or anything like that, but I love it when I'm shooting other stuff (specifically weddings). It's not nearly as cumbersome, strap doesn't get in the way, way quicker, I think it's also more secure and easier to handle the camera.

Oh and I should mention it is a Nikon hand strap - I couldn't find it ANYWHERE on the internet... then again I could be inept at the google search too. A friend of mine posted a picture from one of his weddings (he has the same model camera I do) on his facebook and he had the hand strap. I e-mailed him asking them to pick one up for me next time they were out. A week later it showed up on my doorstep. So you might actually have to go to a camera shop (like a pro shop) to find one.

Sounds great! Do you happen to know if there is a model number or something associated with it? I looked on NikonMall after seeing a post from like 06 on DP Review about their hand strap and it looks like they don't have it anymore. :headache:

I find myself holding the camera more than I find it around my neck, so I thought a hand or wrist strap would be handy (no pun intended). I like walking around with the neck strap on, but when I've actually been shooting for a while I just found that I don't really like it around my neck.

Thanks for the info!

Edited: Is it this one?? The Nikon AH-4??

I know BobQuincy uses one. I am sure as soon as he sees this he will respond!

He is such a nice guy!!!!!

Don't ruin my reputation by writing things like that! ;)

I don't actually use a wrist strap as such, I use fairly narrow shoulder straps (Domke gripper) and most of the day they are wrapped around my wrist to carry the camera. I very rarely use the strap on my shoulder and never around my neck!

This may not work well for a big camera with a big lens. The heaviest I have is a Canon 30D with 70-200 f/4 and the "wrist" strap works well with that or anything smaller and lighter.

No - that's not the one I have. The one I have is a slip in - so you can quickly slip it on and off. I wouldn't want something so cumbersome as that since I end up putting my camera down quite often. I'll take a picture of it tomorrow and post it!

any links that show images and purchase options
I have a Canon XSI and 50d.....same as othe rposters, I always have neck strap dangling down, in the way !!

Here's mine, low tech and used for tens of WDW trips.

Now how does that work when you are actually shooting...I'm guessing there is enough wiggle room that your hand doesn't actually stay in that position the whole time, right??

Except for portrait orientation it probably would not work very well at all. ;) For taking photos I hold the camera with my right hand and let the strap fall from my left hand to get some slack. It takes less thought to do it than to explain it (which is a good thing since I sometimes do it 1000 times a day).

Too late, but I like the Loop - it's nice to let the strap fall away from the camera more readily when setting it down.

I use a cheapie $5 eBay Chinese special. You can sort-of see it here, I can get a better shot if you are curious.

I was proud that I was able to mount it and my Op/Tech at the same time!

The top strap goes into the usual lug on the side, the bottom goes to a plastic piece that screws into the tripod mounting hole. There is another one on the bottom of the plastic so you don't need to remove it to use a tripod. It blocks the battery door and loosening it to access the door is extremely trivial.

Overall I am happy to have it, but the biggest issue is finding a good snugness level. Too loose and you might as well not have it there at all, and too tight and you can't reach some buttons easily (especially the rear wheel and nearby buttons.) I've got a pretty good compromise level set up but it could definitely use to be tighter sometimes and looser other times. Overall, I'm pretty satisfied especially considering the rock-bottom price.

After seeing a few recommendations on this board, I finally bit the bullet and bought a BlackRapid strap.

I finally got around to setting it up, and I must say that I think this will be a great camera carrying solution. I may no longer need to carry any gear in anything other than a backpack. The camera is easily accessible, yet out of the way.

The only problem I've had in my brief experimentation is that when I go to grab the camera, I sometimes have inadvertently hit one of the buttons on the back -- in particular the button that switches the shooting mode from single to multiple to self-timer. I hate pushing the shutter release only to find that the self-timer light is now flashing. I may have to just get used to switching the camera off and on each time I raise or lower it (BTW, I'm using a Canon Rebel XT -- and with my 24-70L 2.8 on there, the weight was much less imposing than with a neck strap).

Regards,

Boris

I also pulled the trigger several weeks ago and gave mine the trial on two Scott Kelby walks. I found it very comfortable and easy to manuver with. I did not have any button issues!

i am ordering one of the Black Rapid RS-5's on Friday when I get paid... I can't wait! I was at a wedding last weekend and brought my camera, and the photographer had a similer sling for his, and it looked like it would work really well...

Two things I wish they would change.

1- lower the price, it is a bit high

2- include a instruction manual

other then that, I love mine

I have the RS-1 and love it, but that RS-5 looks sweet. I wish I had held out a few months, I would be ordering that model also.

Agree 100% on the price. As far as the instruction manual... isn't that little black and yellow card with the BlackRapid logo enough :lmao:? Actually, those were my exact thoughts when I opened up the package... "what, no manual? But wait, there's this really nice logo card that I can display proudly on my desk!" They should save money on that expensive printing and just throw a single page instruction sheet in there instead. I hate having to go online to read instructions (or watch instructional videos) for stuff like this.

Yeah they sent me a business card for ronald dean photography.com! Who needs that maybe, just maybe, in its place put a manual...

I watched the video's, incuding the instruction video (which is not very long) before I bought it.

If there were I thing I would change it would be to have the padded part be neoprane (or what ever it is) like the Op-Tech straps. But even still, it was worth the money. I think it is a great accessory and am very happy I spent the money on it.

Sure I haven't been here in a while, and haven't bought anything new for my camera, I come back and not even 24 hours and you all have me wanting to spend money on something new... :)
