DS wants a camera for his birthday (he will be 14 in a few weeks). He has taken some amazing pictures with those cheap disposable cameras and some great shots using a hand me down camera (that has been dropped- mostly by me- so many times that now the battery case door won't stay closed). He would like to have his own. Need ideas please. Would like it to have 5X or better zoom. Needs to be durable. Needs to be slim so that he can put it in the cargo pocket of his shorts. Video would be a plus. Trying to stay under $200 for camera and memory card. I know we won't find anything with great shutter speed for that price but faster is better. Mainly looking for something really durable that takes great pictures and is small enough to carry in a pocket.

Thanks in advance!

I love Canons. I have a powershot SD1300IS that takes good photos and video. It is small and comes in several colors. I do have a DSLR also but use this smaller point-and-shoot alot too. I think it would be a good camera for a teen. My DD borrows it all the time

Thanks! A Canon is what I have, and also the brand that he has been using that was the hand me down. I have been very happy with them thus far.

Thanks! I will definately check that model out.

I second the Canon brand! We are a Canon family.

I don't have a specific model to refer you to but I'm sure with a bit of research you can find something right for your son.

Best of luck!

Cannons are good. DD has a Sony Cybershot that takes very good pictures and has some nice features. She got it for her 14th birthday. I REALLY like that it uses rechargeable batteries. We got her an extra one so she always has one charged and ready to go. They last SO much longer than AA batteries do. It is very easy to upload photos to the computer too.

Asked DH to get me a camera for my b-day and after doing some searching and trying out a camera that he uses at work we ordered a Canon Powershot SX210is. It's a little bigger then the point and shoot camera I have now but it has way better zoom and video.
