Camera settings?

I have a 35mm Canon EOS Rebel K2. I really like this camera because, I can take lots of pictures quickly and can take fast action pictures which come in handy with the kids. I have lots of day time pictures of WDW and my family on fast rides, that I'm so happy with but, I need help with fireworks and inside dark rides.

Really, only a few of the fireworks shots came out well. I tried using 800 film and we set the camera on a solid surface each time. I didn't even try to take pictures in the dark rides because, I was just getting used to the camera and didn't want to waste a lot of film (I also didn't want to set off the flash). I do have a tripod that I plan on carrying in the stroller this time....for the fireworks...not the dark rides...;)

Any advice on dark pictures? Camera settings? Film Speed?

I use digital, but have the Canon 10D. I set mine for 800 ISO, about f/6 and 1/60th for shutter speed works okay. Also somewhere higher of about f/10-16 can work okay with shutter speed of 1/125th.

Indoor rides are nearly impossible w/o a flash, truthfully. IASW is an okay one to do, but Pirates is really hard due to lack of lighting. I try for as high of an ISO as I can go (I can actually get 3200, but it's noisy) and the lowest apeture with the slowest shutter I can do w/o blur due to shake (about 1/20-1/30 for me)

Good luck :)

On my camera's, I have used the sports setting with flash turned off for fireworks and they cam out okay.

Actually, dh tried using 800 but, the fireworks were blurry because he had our little one climbing on him. Next time we plan on using a tripod but, I don't know what speed I actually need. Is 800 suitable or is there someting better?

you can use any speed film, you just need to change camera settings accordingly.....

use a tripod.... and cable release if possible

a timed exposure is best. AKA bulb setting if possible....leave the shutter open for several bursts of fireworks and have a prominent foreground.

for 100 speed film aperture between f/8 and f/11

for 200 speed film aperture between f/11 and f/16

for 400 speed film...aperture between f/16 and f/22

for 800 speed film aperture between f/22 and f/32

most people just take a quick pic and get one burst of fireworks, if you want more of an aerial display follow the above directions..

or you can always cheat, take your night time pictures and insert fireworks using your computer...

I of course did not pull those settings off the top of my head....

I have an exposure guide that I keep in my camera bag, that lists fireworks, stage shows, night shots..all kind of situations...you dial in your film speed and read the chart...exposure guide

it's similar to this one on ebay....

Thanks for the link. I had no idea there was a chart to help me! Now I can stop begging for settings!

Thanks again!

This is just an FYI for any of you who might have missed the announcement last night. There is a new "Photography" forum here on the DIS, and I've already seen at least one thread about taking fireworks pictures on there. Just wanted to let y'all know since you are interested in photography :).

Thank you ma'am! I did notice that board yesterday but, I had originally posted this question before that. I'll have to go check out the thread on fireworks!:teeth:
