Camera Recommendation

Right now I have a Sony Point and Shoot camera, which is a few years old. It has a rechargable battery which probably needs to be replaced because the dang shutter doesn't go off when I want it to.

Long story short, I want to look for the next level camera. I'm not looking for anything big and fancy with assorted lenses, but love to experiment with the next level of cameras.

Budget would be under $500.
Any suggestions?

Take a look at the Canon G Series. They are top of the line for a p&s camera.

The Canon G series are good; however, I just got a Panasonic DMC-TS3 and LOVE it. It has an extremely fast shutter speed (virtually instant, even in intelligent auto mode). It is water proof up to 40 ft. (I wil never go that deep with it, but this makes it great for water rides), takes GREAT low light pictures, even without a flash!
