I was hoping to get a SLR for my B-day, but then saw how much they were :scared1:

So does anyone have an good reccomendations for a good point and shoot that takes good pictures? Our is a cannon Powershot A620 which has a 4x zoom lens and 7.1mp

There have been some issues with our camera such as the flash not going off all the time....not a huge deal, but since my mom had to get me something for my B-day!!!

We bought our DSLR Canon at B & H for a VERY good price and I wouldn't hesitate buying another camera from them. I'd price it out... the Canon DSLR is a little bit more than a point and shoot, but many electronic sales people told me that a regular point and shoot can't even compare to how long the DSLR will last. DH and I were getting sick of buying a point and shoot camera every 3 - 5 years so we forked over a little bit more and bought a camera with a long life expectancy :)!

Check out adorama.com I purchased a Nikon refurbished. It saved me over $150  and it looks like a brand new camera.....works like one too! I got that idea from my SIL who purchased an SLR camera from them about 6 months ago. It was a refurbished SLR and she has been very pleased with it. Hope this helps!!

Check the non-Cannon and non-Nikon cameras also. The Pentax K-x, for example, is a great option. Most of the entry level dSLRs are very similar these days. You have to want to spend over $1,000 on just the camera body alone before you get into major differences worth arguing over.

I bought the Panasonic Lumix ZS3 last month as a secondary camera to my DSLR (which isn't always convenient to carry). I got it at B&H & they have a great deal on it right now.

I like its 12x optical zoom, auto intelligence which really seems to adjust well for lighting conditions, and because I saw many other disers recommend their older model Lumix cameras.

So far I am very happy with it!

Absolutly have to agree. Can't beat the pic quality, I do not like to take my bigger camera on family trips and ds bought this one I fell in love with. I sell pictures and have as nice from this one as my $600 camera.
I want to find the $ to buy one myself. :thumbsup2

Ditto on this recommendation. Also look at the ZS5 model, which is the same except it has a bigger LCD screen. Both models are on closeout prices right now. Amazon.com has some good deals on them as well.
