Camera, memory cards, batteries for the cruise

Just reminding everyone to check out their cameras before the Podcast cruise.

Don't forget to have more than one memory card, plan to use more than one card during the day. That way if one fails or you lose it you haven't lost all your photos. Also remember to back them up. You should do more than one backup. Lots of folks backup to a computer but you should also have another one on a external hard drive or cd's or dvd's. Don't use a sharpie marker to mark the cd because it can cause the disc to fail over years. They do make archival markers. Label your memory card with your name and phone number or make the first shot on every memory card your contact information. That way it can be returned to you.

Take the image at the highest quality. It is easier to downsize a large image than to take a small image and make it bigger. Memory is cheap so take the image at a high quality. Wouldn't you hate to miss that once in a lifetime picture because you were saving space on your memory card with lots of small images?

Lots of batteries, don't forget your battery charger if your camera requires one.

Don't forget that the flash on most cameras is only good for 10 feet. If you are far away a flash isn't going to help the picture.

Take the time to read your instruction manual. I carry it in my camera bag at all times.

There are going to be lots of great opportunities for photos on the Podcast cruise. I especially enjoy getting those early sunrise shots or the spectacular sunset photos. How about you?

That is the first time I had heard that about Sharpies...I know I have archival quality markers in the house - time to dig them out!!!

I had planned to look up sunrise & sunset times - my favourite photo ops - but your post made me look now.
:goodvibes

Found this from a simple google search...

I am also going to try to take the time to sort and print my pictures to catch up my family albums before we go. I have prepaid cards for where I get my prints, and haven't printed anything since the end of last summer. :scared1:

I have four 2MB cards as of now. I am probably going to pick up a couple more. I have a decent P&S camera and might get another one as a back up just in case. I saw one of those gorilla pod (and mini-gorilla pod) things at the store. They are cute, I might snag one of those too.

Kathy, should we bring DSLR or Point and Shoot or both?

Thanks for the sunrise and sunset times.

You should also reburn cd's and dvd's every couple of years.

I never leave home without my DSLR. :) I just think it takes better pictures and there are some great photo ops. Other people think having a point and shoot is all the camera they need.

I will have both versions with me. :) :)

I keep wanting one of those gorilla pods. I am going to try to travel light on this trip.

This post reminds me of what happened about a month ago. I packed the camera and didn't realize my DH had taken the battery out to charge. We got to my DS hockey practice and had a camera without batteries.:scared1:This would be much worse if we were on vacation.:rotfl:

I always make sure that I have my battery and memory card in the camera before I head out. Can you tell I made that mistake once? :) :)

I have a gorilla pod and have gotten very frustrated with getting it to stay where I want it, or if I want it to be level - I have struggled. Tips would be appreciated!!

When I got my Canon S5, DH got me one 4G SDHC card...and I have re-formatted it once. I carry a few 2 G or 1G cards as spares. I also have a Canon P & S - I call it my "purse camera" Because I can drive the backroads to work, I can get some great photo ops on the way home from a night shift on a quiet Sunday morning. :goodvibes

I have shown up on the first day of a WDW vacation only to have my batteries in my camera die, and ALL my spares back in the hotel. $16 for 4 double A batteries in the Magic Kingdom...:sad2:

Another reminder! You should reformat your memory card after you check the images have downloaded to your computer. Don't just delete the images from the card. REFORMAT IN THE CAMERA, not on your computer. Not reformatting the card every so often can lead to card failures.

We bring with us:
3 cameras
all the equipment with those 3 cameras
Laptop
External Hard Drive.

Ohw and ourselves...

Is your gorilla pod big enough to handle your camera. They make one for Point and Shoot and another for Mid-Size/dSLR cameras. I love mine and it will even hold my dSLR on a light post.

All my cards are brand new. Should I still reformat them?

Yep, like others said its good to format them in the camera that you are using.

I can't wait to try out my new equipment on the cruise. I bought a couple new lenses and have some new "techniques" to test out on some of the awesome landscapes.

Can I just ask you podcast cruise photo-nerds a favor - if the shuttle liftoffs on schedule can you get photos of it from Castaway Cay?

Atlantis and crew are targeted for liftoff May 12 at 1:31 p.m. EDT

I will keep an eye out for it!!! :goodvibes

AHA! That could be it...I will try it on the point and shoot later...Thanks!

Yes, that will only be a one time mistake. :rotfl:

Yes you should format them in your camera before you use them the first time.

I don't do these things. I should really take care of this stuff. I also never hear that thing about the Sharpies. You learn something new everyday.
