Does anyone have experience with the Domke F-5XB?

I need something just for my xti with 70-300IS attached, maybe room for a smaller lens too. While I would love to keep my camera on my shoulder or around my neck at all times while we are in the parks, my poor 3 year old typically ends up paying for it with repeated knocks in the head.

The Optech would be a great idea but it doesn't seem like there is one deep enough for the zoom lens.

Any ideas? I have the slingshot 100 but its bigger than what I need in the parks. Thanks!

I have a small Lowepro back pack that I have been using for about 8 years so far I think. I think at the time it was their smallest one. Its a back back so it has two straps which is better for me because it frees up both arms and hands when I am climbing up and down things.
IMO their stuff while expensive are very worth it. Its what I use as my small carry on for the plane. The bottom compartment is for the camera equipment, slr body, lenses, camcorder. The top one I put in ipod, documents, contacts, bottle of water, snacks. Heck I even was able to throw in a pair of shorts into it so I could change as soon as I got to orlando.
I cant say enough good things about it. 8 years lugged all over the country and its still in great shape. :)
Only thing now is that my Canon 40D body is MUCH larger than any other slr I have had in there so it looks like I need to go a bit bigger. :scratchin

Hi,
I am a Nikon D80 user, so I don't know how big a XTi 70-300 IS is, but both my Kata holster and my Optech pouch will hold my Nikon D80 with my 70-300VR attached.
Both bags actually have an extra few inches in front of my regular 18-135 kit lens.
Regarding my Kata bag, I can put an extra lens at the bottom of the bag or in the side pockets. On my last trip I did have my 50mm in one pocket along with extra batteries, SD cards, lens cloth, and flash batteries; and my SB-800 flash in the other pocket. If I take out the flash, I can fit my 70-300VR lens in the other pocket. If I use the 18-135 kit lens attached to the camera, I can even fit my 10-20mm lens on top of my camera. It all fits, but it's a snug fit. The only thing is lugging all that around at the same time does get heavy.
That's why I love the Optech. I bought the large Optech pouch to be able to accommodate my VR lens if I wanted to use that instead of the kit lens. I didn't get the one that is big enough to accomodate an extra battery grip, I got the next size down. (I believe the link in the other post above is the one for the large zoom lens. If not, look around on their site, it's there because that's where I bought it.) The pouch is shaped, so it never loses its shape/size. When I use my Optech, I just stick my 50mm in another bag. (Fanny Pack) I did try that w/ my VR once, but found it to be too heavy to lug around the park in my fanny pack. I have back problems, so I have to travel as light as possible and avoid too much strain on my lower back. Hope that helps... :)

Thanks for the recommendation...I went ahead and ordered the optech. The dimensions are a few tenths of an inch short in length, but I assume there will be a little give in the neoprene. Its absolutely perfect for my needs, I think. Thanks again!

I have a monster Tamrac backpack to carry all of my stuff (above mentioned camera/lens combo and other lenses, teleconverters, etc). However, I was also thinking about getting the smallest bag possible that would be able to fit the D80 with attached 70-200mm f/2.8 lens attached. At most I would want to be able to include my 2 teleconverters, but that's not even a priority. Having to lug the big backpack to an indoor soccer game where I wouldn't be switching anything out was an eye opener to me!

Thanks for any input/suggestions!!

a vest is the best solution for sports/etc.

I throw my large bag and vest in the car, once i get to my destination I grab the camera body and lenses I want for that particular shoot, put on the vest And I'm, good to go,, my batteries, memory cards, etc, stay in the vest at all times..

also for the 70-200 2.8 I highly recommend a lens cradle to reduce stress on your lens mount..

I am still on a quest for the "perfect" camera bag to carry around the world.
I am considering the Tamrac 5534 adventure messenger 4 dslr.
Does anyone here have this? Do you like or dislike it? Trying to make a decision. Thank you!!

What camera and gear do you have?

I have an adventure 7 which is a backpack. It works perfectly for me when I want to carry most (or all of my gear): room for Rebel XT with lens on, plus has compartmenst for 4 more lenses. I use those for 2 lenses and battery charger/extra battery. Occassionally (okay, rarely) I carry my external flash (man, that's $400 I'll never get back!;) ) The front zip compartment carries extra CF cards, and the top compartmant (which also has a handy interior net pouch) carries my manual, a paperback book ("Field Guide to the Rebel XT), pen, paper and anything else I need for the day (snack, wallet, etc). I originally bought the Adventure 6, but had to return it b/c the top compartment was too small to be useful (couldn't fit my paperback user's guide). Also, I love that the backpack has a side pouch for my phone and a water bottle.

Recently I added a Tamrac Express 6, for when I didn't need the full backpack. I was looking more for something I could wear around my waist, but went with this instead. Mine is khaki colored, doesn't look like a typical camera bag. I can fit in the camera w/ lens and one extra lens, but it is a very tight squeeze. It is easier to acccess the camera a little more quickly than a backpack, though.

Both these bags are comfortable and have each been schlepped around WDW for commando tours. I must admit, however, my shoulder was relieved the day I left the camera and Express 6 in a locker for a while at MGM...:rolleyes1
I also looked at, and really liked, the Tamrac Velocity, which was a more sling-type bag (and, I believe, also included a waist belt). Ultimately, the Express 6 better served my own taste. Here's a pic of the Velocity 7; like the Adventure and the Express, they come in several sizes:

All in all, I've looked at many products, and really like the Tamrac line! Your choice will depend on budget, taste, specific purpose/need and mostly, size/amount of equipment you are hauling!:)

BTW, I am borrowing a friend's Canon 30D this week. Her bag contains camera with lens and an extra zoom lens, plus peripherals. It's a case logic bag, very sturdy, completely serves its purpose and I'm sure cost less than half of either of my bags!

I just got the Lowepro Orion Trekker II for our trip next month to WDW. I wanted a backpack type of camera bag that would also hold extra things we needed to take to the parks (wallets, etc.)

I got a pretty good deal on it at ebags.com......they have a decent selection of camera bags overall.

I have the Adventure 9 Backpack:

and the Messenger 4:
http://www.tamrac.com/5534.htm

The backpack is great for carry a photo kit and computer stuff. Also room for money, passports, keys, etc. It does get heavy after a day or two, though. I bought the messenger bag for traveling light, same a PoohJen, and it works well for one body, one lens, flash and maybe a battery. It could be about an inch wider, the camera with battery pack (30D) or larger camera (1Ds) make the bag buldge and hard to snap the cover closed.

They've both hard hard use and still work well and look good.

i have the tamrac system 3. it holds my rebel body, 28-135, 70-200f4, 10-17, 50mm, 100mm and assorted junk, it has enough room it should hold my 40d when i get it instead of the rebel
i liked this one cause it has a piggyback thing to go over hubs rolling art bag..so no carrying...shwoo..i have a canon backpack that is my corral all my gear bag but i hate carrying backpacks since you have to take them off and lay them down to get in to them...

I have the adventure 7, which i got just before our last disney trip. i looked through so much info about camera bags, wanting to be sure i picked just the right one for me. we made several trips to wolf camera, circuit city, best buy, etc, looking at the bags, and i had to read lots of reviews, articles, etc. for most of the bags i was interested in that i couldnt find in a store near me. after lots of thought, i went with the adventure 7, and i LOVE it...its just the right size for me...i can fit my olympus evolt e500, both lenses, and my panasonic camcorder in there, as well as have the top compartment for my disney must haves, like maps, travel wipes, snacks, ponchos, etc. There is also plenty of space for extra memory...and it fits on the back well, isnt heavy....just all around the best for me! the only thing i wish it had was a good place for the tripod, but i have had no luck in figuring out the best way to trnasport that anyways :(

I have the Tamrac Velocity 7 which takes my flash, two spare lenses, my 400D with extended lense--not to mention a collection of (too much) other junk.

http://www.tamrac.com/frame_velocity.htm

I like the way it swings from backpack to front of body access. That said, I (mostly) trust the WDW environment to the point where I'll be comfortable with my gear on my back, but that sure doesn't go for a lot of places.

Oh yes, I forgot to add that we can (and do) fit our camcorder into the top pouch of the Adventure 7 when we want to bring that too!

(and I too tried on every bag at Circuit City and Ritz! got the Adventure from CC, Express from Amazon)

And, oh yes, I meant to mention that for both my Tamrac bags, my only complaint is I wish there were an easy way to attach my monopod to the outside of the bag!

Any other suggestions? While I can certainly appreciate the benefits of a vest, I'm looking for a small bag that will carry the camera when not in use. We tend to arrive a good 30 minutes early and a lot of times will stay to watch games after ours. I don't want to have the camera around my neck the whole time.

I'm thinking maybe the Tamrac Velocity 9x, but I wasn't sure if there was something smaller that would suit my needs.

Thanks :)

lowepro sling shot 75 (pretty sure thats what it's called). A much smaller bag that can tranport camera with lens, 75-300 and 18-55 with ease. Also carries charger, lens caps and small snack items. quite handy.

do a search on ebay for "zoom camera bag"

you will find several options, one says it will hold body and zoom lens up to 7 inches...

I'm not sure if skr8pn is talking about the Top Loader 75 or the Slingshot series (100, 200 or 300). Both the Top Loader 75 or the Slingshot 100 might work for you. I have the Toploader 75 for same reason the OP mentioned, not wanting to carry my backpack with all of my gear when I know I'll just need my 70-200 f/2.8 IS for the kids soccer games. My teleconverter fits in the bottom pocket and extra memory cards and batteries fit in the front pocket. You can get lens pouches that attach to the side if you want an extra lens or two. I usually have to bring my 85mm f/1.8 to the indoor soccer games because the lighting is so bad. The Topload 75 also has a rain cover that pulls up over the whole case. Useful here in the Seattle area.

Here is a review of the Topload 75. They have a lot of camera bag pictures/reviews on this site as well.
