camera and lens repair

Would you pay $190 to get the Olympus E-500 fixed as a back up camera?

  • Yes, a second camera is great to have!

  • No, you've got all you need with your new D-80

Help!

We are here now and my canon EOS20D has stopped working, no flash!

I have tried everything in the little book, is there a repair here or nearby?

I just got this camera in august for our DCL cruise.

Thanks!

Susy

Ouch! Your camera is still under warranty if you bought it new and Canon will fix it free. Needless to say that won't help you this week. There is a shop in Orlando that claim to be "factory authorized service center" for Canon. http://www.spts-orlando.com/ They claim they have rush service.
Now I am only saying this cause I don't know you, but the flash does not automatically pop up if the camera is set to the P,Tv,Av,M or A-DEP modes. And only some of the preset shooting modes automatically engage the flash. Have you tried pushing the button that manually pops the flash up? It has a little lightning bolt next to it. Maybe if you can put it up it will at least work for you till you get home. Hope this helps.

Very low tech solution--have you replaced teh batteries? Often when they are beginning to get low the flash will no longer work, but the rest of the camera features will.

I am obviously technically challenged, but maybe you guys can help me thru my crisis...

I press the button...

the flash mechanism pops up and opens, it pauses for the flash which doesnt flash, then I think it says "busy" in the view finder, then it snaps a dark picture that you cant see at all

I changed the batteries, anything else I should try?

Thanks so much!

Susy

Well, if your are in full auto and the falsh won't flash even when it is up, I am afraid I am stumped. The only thing I can suggest is make sure nothing is under the rails of the hotshoe (where you would mount an external flash). There are tiny microswitches underneath the rails that disable the onboard flash when you put a flash on.

You could call Canon support at 1-800-828-4040. Good luck.

Thanks to all of you for your ideas. I called canon support, thanks for the numb er, and they had me try a couple things but nothing worked.

I bought a disposable with a flash to use last night

Thanks again,

Susy

Sorry to hear that Susy, hope the rest of your trip goes better. At least you can use it during the day. And you can practice taking night shots without a flash. Bump up the ISO, open the lens to it's lowest F/stop, and stand very still. You should get some great shots like that. Disney is the perfect place for this.

Does anyone have the link for the free camera repair for defective Sonys? They sent me a shipping label but I didn't print it and now its expired. I can't seem to find the orginal link. Can anyone help?

I found it! see the post "Found this out Ref. Sony...."

FWIW, a month or so ago, we had Sony repair (under a recall warranty, so it was free) the wife's old Minolta X20... it was fairly quick and painless. They tossed in a new CCD and lens.

The problem is that now we have no excuse to replace this aging camera which produces mediocre photos! Oh well...

While on vacation this week at WDW our Sony mini Dv camcorder went on the fritz. When you try to press the record button, it switches to the different modes (memory card, then play/edit). Once it reaches play/edit, you cannot shut it off and have to take the battery off to get it to go back to normal. Anyone have recommendations on my best course of action to get it repaired? Or would I be better off to get a new camcorder? This one is nearly three years old by the way.

Thanks!

I experienced a problem with my Sony Camera CCD on a 3 year camera. Come to find out, they had a class action lawsuit for this exact reason and I got my CCD replaced free of charge. I had not heard of this until it happened to me. It also affected several models of both still cameras and video cameras. There was a list of them all and I posted it on here. This sounds like something entirely different, but may be worth checking into. I went to the Sony website, and clicked on support and got to a place where I was chatting online with a Sony Rep in reference to my problem. This eventually led me to finding out about the free repair. Definately worth a few minutes of chatting online with a Sony rep to possibly find out if this is a common fault or what your problem may be. Hope it helps:thumbsup2

Thanks, I will give that try. I did go to Sony online and it qualifies for fixed rate repair, but at $211, it would be almost as cheap to buy a new one with a warranty and everything.

Canon_10D_with_17-40_no_cap_resize.jpg

I had an accident with my 10D... it was dropped about 24" and it dinged the lower corner. The body no longer functions properly and gives an error code. The lens appears to have survived though.

Anyone know what the repair is likely to run with Canon? I want to ask them to fix it AND maybe update the shutter assembly. If they will do oth I'll pay to fix it. Otherwise I'm inclined to leave it as is and just wait for the 30D replacement due in September/October this year.

Below is NOT my body - rather it is a demonstration image of someone elses' 10D!

I know a friend paid $216 for new Shutter assembly on a Digital Rebel, that was without shipping since he lives close to the Carson facility.

I wont even guess at how much the repair would cost. Used 20Ds can be found in the $500 range.

wondering where you hear the part i bolded, sorry no info on the other part

That is pretty much everyones guess, it is based on Canons release history.
well in that case i've been hearing that for months:lmao: after the spring rumor fell through......... i think the released the xti in aug( although maybe that was to counter the pentax releases who knows), that 's what i am hoping for

But the "spring rumor" was a deviation from the release pattern and was based on nothing more than hope.
