I am hoping since so many of you are scrapbookers, you are also photography buffs.

I have an old Cannon AE-1 program I haven't used in years. But my children are approaching high school and I would like to get a zoom lens (football, baseball, cheerleading).

Can I get one for the AE-1?

Or should I start over with a new camera?

I am not a professional photographer by any stretch, but I would like to get some pictures closer up than with my automatic zoom I have now.

I would love to know what camera you all use and recommend for shooting pictures such as these.

Also are there any good website for advice on such matters?

Thanks!

I recently switched to digital, but digital isn't good for action shots. For film photography I love my Canon Rebel 2000 ... it's easy to use and accepts all sorts of lens.

I use www.bhphotovideo.com for checking out cameras.

There is a magazine out called "The Big Book of Photography" or something like that. Has TONS of information on bodies, lenses, etc.

Memaw is right - digital, unless you're in the really high end SLR versions are not good for action.

I have a Pentax ZX-10. There is a newer model out now. I have several multi option lenses, 28-80, 80-200 & 70-300. I shoot action with DS's football and tennis, DD's horsemanship, and both choir & theater. The last having the added challenge of high speed films/low speed shutters when shooting in just the stage lighting.

We looked at the Canon Rebel recently and discovered thatthe latest model of has been reporting a LOT of handshake. Something that will only be accentuated with a longer lens.

If I'm remembering correctly the Canon AE-1 is all manual, not having the option of putting into an autofocus mode, auto F-stop/apeture setting mode? Is that correct? You can probably still get lenses that would work but might want to look into a newer system. I've used bhphotovideo myself and am quite pleased with them.

You may want to go to a local (reputable) camera shop and get some ideas first and then shop for price. Not sure if you have a Ritz Camera in your area - our's is usually ok on price but their salespeople are not the one's I'd rely on for expert advice.

Good luck! PattyT just bought a new camera too. I think she bought one of the newer Pentax models if memory servers accurately.

Thank you so much for the advice........I greatly appreciate the help.

I will check out the website and visit a local camera shop.

I have a Canon AE1 Program. It was a great camera. I used a telephoto lens with it all the time. It was great. I am sure you can still buy lenses for it.

If you aren't ready to make the leap to digital it is still a great camera.

I have an AE 1 as well. Great camera. I had a 300 zoom lens for it. You can buy tons of stuff for it on the used market. There is a dealer near me that has some great stuff and they have a website. Here is the link to Hunt Photo:

My sister has a digital. The pictures are good, but the photo paper is not as sturdy as the regular paper used on photos, no matter what type she tries. You can also tell the pics are digital. There is just no substitute for a good SLR camera.

FYI, I switched cameras to a Nikon N60 4 years ago. I bought it because it is both manual and auto. Unfortunately I have become very lazy and ust the auto all the time, but the quality is great.
