Camcorder or no Camcorder.....that is the question?!

I took both, right up to the point when video on digital cameras improved. Now just carry a compact and shoot video clips with that. I don't really like to carry much stuff around so just having a small handbag or just stuffing the camera in one of the men's short pockets is fine for me. I also have quite a lot of memory cards which I never go through so can video as much as I want really. I found having the mixture of the two made good home movies with the minimal of effort.

I like having some video memories to go with the photos but I much prefer not having to carry stuff around all day.

Hiya - we go for the digital camera with video also option. We want to spend the time enjoying things through our own eyes - not a viewfinder, so do short shots of video on the digital stills camera.

Also -some shows you are not supposed to video and would find it difficult to do so anyhow with limited light at some, and the audience noise being closer than the stage noise in most shows - all you will hear on playback is "Jaaaaaaaaahnny stawp pickin yoa nose", "I don't think its as good as that other show with them talkin birds" etc.... as we have found from experience...

I don't dispute the point you are making at all. But you had me in stitches for a minute.

Now just carry a compact and shoot video clips with that.

I think that is where each person has to weigh (excuse the pun) it up. My camera is not compact. I do have a compact and take it with for days when I am willing not to have 100 pics per portion of the day. But I do miss my normal camera when I do that - depends what you are used to, but I find a compact so fiddly and quite like my sturdy camera body. I think a small camcorder would be lighter than my camera - easily.

I completely agree with Kev. It's really about striking a balance. We have a very small 60GB digital cam that comfortably fits in the palm of my hand. No viewfinder to stare through, just a screen to watch from a bit of a distance. Really makes it easy to balance between watching the live action and focusing and centering the film.

And, BTW Kev, this is the first time I've participated in a thread that you've been a part of, so may I say.....you're my TR idol! Recently, I've returned to the Dis, remembered your reports, but couldn't remember your last name to find all your reports, so I very neatly typed the following into Google:

"Kevin. Disney. Beer."

And voila.....found you quite easily with that.

On the subject of taking a camcorder we have a sony straight onto dvd one and its so small its no more hassle to carry than the still camera. I couldnt imagine not having it even though ive never got round to editing any of it. I think to capture memories you need both and like others have said we do have many days when we leave it safely back atthe villa so everyone gets to enjoy the day.

With regard to the camera v camcorder debate, we take both. I do most of the videoing (is that a word?) and Tam takes most of the photos. Of course, this means I'm missing from most of the camcorder footage, but this is usually looked upon as a good thing!

I agree with everyone who's suggested that it's about getting a balance, but I'd also add that it's not the shows which are fun to look back on, but rather the footage of everyone having a good time. In fact, I'd go as far as to say that watching videos of entire shows can border on boring. I absolutely adore IllumiNations, for example, but watching a video of it doesn't really do anything for me.

we have always taken the camcorder on our trips to Florida, and to be honest i film anything and everything! we end up- with hours and hours and more hours of our holiday, and do you know what, its just great watching it all back on a cold winters night in front of the gas fire!
I have to agree though, if im filming shows i do feel like i havent seen it, but then theres the excuse to go back and watch it again!

I am one of the ones who takes hours and hours of video, and most if it doesn't make it onto the final disc or project. But I have often amazed myself with the amount of things I have used in a project that, on their own, don't look anything special. They just seem to suit the moment. For that reason alone I can't imagine ever going without a camcorder
