Calling Typhoon Lagoon Tech Experts

My son, 12, has an interesting question, and being the experts on just about everything, I thought I'd start here.

Can you tell me just how does the wave pool at Typhoon Lagoon work? I mean, you hear a *BOOM* and here comes a giant wave to drown you. But what generates the wave?

There's a huge water tank behind that wall out there. It fills up inbetween waves, and when they want to make a wave the throw open doors on the bottom of the huge tank. The water flows under the wall and up on the otherside (into the lagoon) Then it works just like a normal wave in the ocean. I'm not sure if that swooshing sound is made on purpose, or it's somting back there making the noise.
