I have just activated my phone so that I can call home using my mobile if needed, but can someone tell me how to do this!

Do I just call like I would from a normal pay phone and if so what number do I put in before the +44?? :confused3

I am on Orange - does anyone know how much it will cost to send an MMS home?? :confused3

Yuo can set up your mobile to use international format numbers I think - change your stored numbers to +44 and drop the '0' like you said and you should get straight through with no problems - I did anyway :)

Can't help with your tariff as I'm a Virgin - honest ;)

I'm on O2 and the info comes through, when you land, that you can just dial straight from your address book - ie, if you have a listing for 'fred', just press dial....
To send a text home I think it's 35p on O2.
With O2 you can arrange, for a fee, a cheaper monthly, international, call plan for whilst you're away if you plan to contact home often.

would it not be cheaper to use your mobile to send text messages home, and then buy a phone card to phone home, i was just thinking that when we phone home from florida we can be on the phone for about 20 minutes each time. Using a mobile for this amount of time for us would cost a fortune!
Just a thought.. :flower:

if you're calling from the US, you dial 011 before the 44.
Not heard of this before, is this for landline or mobile? I have used mobiles in US for the last 12 years and only use +44 then miss the 0.

This is taken from Orange website:
"making a call
Remember, if you are calling the UK, leave out the first '0' and add +44 before the number. To make a local call or to call another country while abroad leave out the first '0' and add the country code followed by the number."

Remember to turn off your voicemail while over there. I once had a car salesman leaving messages for me (which was a wrong number and nothing to do with me). Cost me around £30 to retreive messages.

Your cellphones must dial the international line automatically. the "+" is the 011.
So ignore what I said. Your phones work differently than the one I have. On mine i have to dial the "+" part first (the actual number, not a +).

And yes, when you're calling from a landline in the US, you should dial 011 first. Just like when you're in the UK I think you have to dial 00 first. (like to call the states is 001-etc.etc.). .

I text my mum and she calls me in the hotel, it is much cheaper for her to call from her phone at home. That way she will only ring when we are in the room and not sleeping.

When we stayed in a villa at Windsor Palms the calls were free, even international! I was calling cousins and everyone :rotfl2:

Be careful using your mobile, in the past I have intended to make a short call, got chatting and it cost me LOADS.

Texting is alot cheaper than calling. Most networks are around the 35p/text mark, whereas when you call you pay a fee to your UK provider, and one to the US provider. Even receiving calls costs you as you pay the US "leg" of the call. If you take your mobile, it is probably worth turning off your voicemail facility to save valuable, and expensive pennies!

I don't know how it works when you use a British mobile in the US.

US mobiles pay for incoming as well as outgoing. So maybe when you're in the US, you have to do that as well. I don't know.

One word of warning - if anyone in the UK calls your mobile, it still costs you around £1 per minute to receive it - my work called me (at 6.30am US time) to see if we were ok after Hurricane Frances last year - 11 minutes and £11 on my bill later, yes we're fine!! (I'm with O2 contract)

Yes, DH was called several times when we were in Florida (he had to keep his phone on for business reasons) and his bill came to around £50 more than normal!!
