Calling Home from St Thomas and St Maarten

What is the best way to call home from both of these two places?Can one find phone cards near port?Any help is greatly appreciated.We leave in two weeks,and I want to be able to call home while I am gone.Thanks!

There were payphones on the pier at St. Maarten. I remember them because they were red and had signs that said "No Pre-paid phone cards accepted."

We used our cell phones (Sprint) in St. Thomas. They worked just fine. Not sure about public phone availability.

I also used my Sprint phone in St. Thomas. It worked great. In St Maarten there is a store just past the dock for the water taxi up on the 2nd floor. It was an internet/ phone store that sold phone cards for use with their system for $12 /25 minutes. Worked well and I was unsure what charges might be incurred using a charge card in the payphones near the dock.

DD regularly calls me from St. Thomas on her Cingular phone so I know Cingular service works there.

I don't think it will unless you have one of these phones (i2000plus, v60, P280, T720)..... St. Thomas has only GSM coverage... Nextel phones have to be able to use GSM to work. Definitely call Nextel to confirm....

As of May Nextel didn't work in St.Thomas. There is an ATT office about 1/2 block from the dock that you can place calls from. I don't remember the cost but it wasn't that much. Very reasonable & easy to get a phone to call from. The ones on the dock are very busy all day. It was easy to walk to also. The Paradise point tram is next to it. Enjoy!

Verizon does work in St. Thomas. DW called home and we only got hit with regular rates.

We called home from St. Maarten last December and used our calling card. We only left a 1 minute or so messge on an answering machine and it cost us nearly $40! A bit of a shock when we got home!

We bought a phone card in St. Maarten but couldn't use it again in St. Thomas so gave it (with it's remaining minutes) to our waiter, along with his tip receipt.
