Mabel is driving me nuts!!!! She is just so much more "active" than Babe was!!!!

I NEED SOME POINTERS!!!!!!
HELP HELP!!!

This is what we do with Maddy (not when she's hyper, just sometimes) we take her to "the field" and let her run
and run
and run
and eventually she comes back to the truck and is ready to go home!

I know about the running. We have a big yard, but not that big. I was letting her go play with the springer spaniel 2 doors down...they would play for an hour or 2 and I would have such a "peaceful" night!! LOL!!! She was just fixed a week and a half ago and she isn't suppose to run or jump...   so I haven't taken her down to play lately.

It is just the jumping, nipping, hyperness, chewing. She really doesn't like any of the chew things I got her...nothing really holds her attention!!

I just keep thinking and saying to myself "she will get better" cause everyone I have talked to that had one said they were the best.

Today, I went to Pets Mart and a guy had a 10 wk old Bullmastiff (thats what Babe was!!) and it was just the cutest little thing!!!

Anyway...I plan to take her to puppy school soon..I really wish I would have started sooner.

Sometimes I think I should change her name to "Cookie" because that seems to be the only word she will come to you with!! LOL!!!

A bump.....I know there are more Weim owners out there!!

We had one many years ago - what a great dog! We taught him to fetch a ball or frisbee very young. So I'd sit out in the yard and throw for him for hours - until he'd drop! She's so cute! She'll grow out of this phase - get her something to chew on. Baron, our wiem. was only "bad" when he couldn't be with people. Heaven forbid if he was locked in the washroom or out in the garage - he'd tear the place apart. He just couldn't stand it - but was a great dog around kids and a wonderful companion.

We gave our lab puppy the little rawhide chew sticks whenever she seemed bored and looking for something to chew on. She's 9 months now and very active - sometime I just have to take her outside and throw the ball for 10 or 15 minutes to take the "edge" off so she'll quiet down. :goodvibes

Mabel isn't so cute anymore...that pic in my sig is from when we first got her in April. She is now 6 months old next week and 55 pounds!!!

Nothing really seems to satisfy her when it comes to chewing...except my sunroom couch and our shoes

I'm totally inept at posting pics - but Baron was so cute when he hit that awkward age where his ears were huge and so were his feet. He looked like he was all ears and big feet!

:dog2:

Weims are definitely a high strung breed!

You just have to be patient and wait it out.

Some are chewers, some aren't. Our first Weim was very determined and tried to chew his way into our bedroom one day. We'd close all the doors so he couldn't get into any trouble while we worked during the day. Well....a closed door was NOT going to stop him! He clawed and chewed the rug right down to the subflooring trying to get into the bedroom. He wanted to go in there and lay on the bed until we got home! From that day on we left the doors opened and all was fine. These dogs don't take no for an answer! They'll do everything in their power to get their way!

Our current Weim damaged a doorknob by chewing on it trying to open the door to get out of the laundry room. We put him in there so he couldn't damage anything while we were out one afternoon! He also damaged his teeth trying to get out of his crate by chewing on the door of it.

Our first Weim would like to get into our drawers and pull out clothes while we were out. I have a few scratched up/chewed on drawers to prove it! If we just left it open a little bit he could get in and pull something out and then he'd be okay. He just wanted to have something with our scent on it to keep him company during times when he was alone.

I'd say after they're about 1 1/2 - 2 y.o., the spiteful chewing stops, so you have a way to go yet!

There are ways to get them to stop chewing on things like the legs of chairs, I've heard that if you smear Vicks Vaporub on the things she's chewing on it'll deter her, but I've not tried it. Do you buy her rawhides? Both our Weims loved them and couldn't get enough of them.

If you can just get past the puppy stage (and they have a puppy mentality for a long time!) you'll have one of the best dogs!

I often check the want ads of my local paper and every now and then I'll see a year old Weim for sale. Recently there was a female that came with her crate, bed, said she was great with other house pets and small children and she even had a microchip should she get lost. Price was $700. I'm betting they couldn't put up with her being so active. Why else would they want to sell her other than maybe allergies or going to live overseas?

Before we bought our first one, I remember reading somewhere "if you are looking for a dog that is going to sit in the corner of the room and be content, this is not the breed for you!"

Obedience classes should calm her down some. Good luck, and keep me posted!

Thanks for your stories and advice

I didn't really mean Mabel isn't cute anymore...she is at that awkward stage...all ears and feet is true!!!!...Just not that "puppy cute" like in my signature

I should post some updated pictures of her. I am borrowing a friend computer right now since mine died. But maybe I will try to get some posted later today.

Another "cute" thing is she just loves this sleeping bag we have. She grabs ahold of a corner and actually "sucks" it til she falls asleep. I am going to attempt to cut a small section out to make it easier for her. Right now, she drags that sleeping bag everywhere!!

I grew up with Weimies, even though I have beagles now. My parents have 2 Weimies and my sister has 1. They do stay "puppyish" for a pretty long time. I'm only half-joking when I suggest this...get another Weimie for her to play with!!! They're awesome in two's, and they can keep each other company and run each other ragged. Believe me, 2 dogs are actually easier than 1, IMO.

Otherwise, you just need to see that she gets tons of exercise. If you can't do it during the day, maybe you could try doggie daycare? My mom did that with her youngest Weimeraner for awhile. All the Weimies my family has had (8, in all) have been chewers. One of our old ones (gone now) chewed through the basement door. :earseek: They've chewed couches, carpets, chairs, eyeglasses, shoes...just to name a few items. They've swallowed washcloths, bars of soap, Brillo pads, aluminum foil, plastic wrap.

They're such smart and sweet dogs, but they are really labor-intensive in the early years. You need a crate, a playmate for her and lots of patience! ;) Good luck with her. She's adorable!! :goodvibes

HELP HELP!!!

Send her to Maine- I'll take her and you can get another bull mastiff... :teeth:

Seriously- all I can say is they (weims) like to be with "their" people. Maddy chewed some things up as a pup.... but in a year or so she was out of that stage. Be patient.
