Calling all Princesses! (2014 Princess Half Marathon Weekend)- thread #2

Yup--a 4 mile fun run offered free by our local running shoe store! Starts at 10 am so I don't have to get up tooooo early....

Joining in!

Is anyone else doing GSC and having trouble with the back to back training? Normally I only run every other day and cross train in between but I've done a few back to back runs and cramped up and come out with slight (overuse) injuries every time. Tips?

I am having trouble training period. I ran for a half hour yesterday and was hoping to get a run in today but Wouldn't ya know I was attacked by a dog yesterday. Cant move my wrist, by calf has about 8 puncture wounds and a small laceration, The bruising in insane and lets not get started on my foot. I wont be walking on that anytime soon. I'm hoping this new year starts off better than this one ended lol

Oh, my gosh --- that's horrible! A dog you knew or a dog that attacked when you were out running? Hope you heal quickly.

I am ridiculously behind in my training. I was looking forward to the kids going back to school Thursday so I could get back into the swing of things, but now we are getting a major snowstorm and it looks like they will be home until Monday. Then the bitter cold sets in. real feel temps of -21.

I have got to get back on track! Tomorrow DS17 and I are hitting the gym. Then DH should have my treadmill cleared off by tomorrow night, he's purging the basement. I guess I will be relegated to the machine for the long haul. I was hoping to get some longer runs in outside, but that doesn't look like that's happening now.

Anyone else doing a New Years Day run? DH and I are doing the "Hair of the Dog" 4 mile run that benefits our local YMCA. Predicted temperature at race start? A "balmy" 23 degrees!
I'm on my phone and can't access the smilies.. so just imagine I'm cringing! Good luck and stay warm!

OMG, how scary! I actually stopped running a section of my neighborhood because there's a new guy who keeps walking his two pit bulls off-leash. Terrifies me! I hope you heal quickly.

I'm relegated to the 'mill here in FL, too... Not by temp, but by pollen. It's been so warm this "fall", the pollen's just been awful! Here's to getting it done, no matter the environmental obstacles!

OK ladies, here we go...

If I calculated correctly, we have seven weeks. We can do this. One day at a time, one run/walk at a time. Make it part of your daily schedule...not I will get this run in when I have time attitude. Make a commitment TODAY and you will make it to the finish line on 2/23. Place the vision in your head and stay positive...see yourself finishing, think about the finish line when the run/walk seems long or hard. Think about coming running down Main Street at the MK and then coming out of the Castle.

Don't sweat the small stuff...a missed short run or cross train day...just don't make it a habit. Take care of yourself, eat well and get good rest. Wash your hands and gargle with warm salt water to ward off germs.

Put the work in now so you can enjoy the event!

Happy New Year Princesses! I did 45 min in the 30 degree morning before I could change my mind:) felt good!

Anyone have any suggestions for cross training workouts that I can get on demand or from netflix? Not really a gym person but need something more.

Yes, I just found a good one about a month ago and then reading runners world last night found another that looks good. Hope it is ok to post link

Hope that works. A 35 min core will Jillian and 30 min. yoga from runners world. Just google if it doesn't work or ask me to try and post again.

Thanks! Definitely need to build up my core - not Mrs. Claus yet but this holiday season did me no favors :)

I second the yoga, and if you can get a set of weights (5-10 lbs) that would be great. Runners World has great videos, including the Iron Strength workout. I have yet to be able to get through that one--it is a killer, but can be modified and requires no equipment. You can just do pieces of it.

Well said! Another way I look at it is this: if you start doing long runs on Sundays at 4 miles this Sunday and only add ONE mile every weekend between now and the race, you will be at 10 miles the weekend before the race. For my last half I only trained up to 10 and the atmosphere helped with that other 3 miles!

And that's only if you add one. If you wanted to closer to the race, you could add 1.5 or even 2 to get closer to 13. You may not be as trained as if you started 1, 2, or more months ago but it's not out of the realm of possibilties just yet, ladies!!

I do my 30 minute runs on the treadmill and long runs outside. When I get off the treadmill, I'm dizzy. This happen to anyone else? I can run forever outside and feel just fine. I'm stuck training this way for a while. Wondering if there is anything I can do to help with dizziness. Thanks!

It happens to me sometimes, too. I bought a fan to put in front of my 'mill because even with the AC running, my house is near 80 in the summer (ah, Florida!), but found that it also helped a lot with the dizziness. Also, be sure to be looking forward, out toward an imaginary horizon, not down at the belt. That should help, too.

For PHM '13, I ended up doing exactly what you said. Granted, it wasn't the ideal plan, but I made it through the race.

I had every intention of not doing that again, but... well, here I am: ready for my "long" 4 mile run this weekend. :-) This time, I'm also adding in Jillian workouts.

Taper your speed at the end of the run, i.e. go from a run to a short cool-down walk lowering the treadmill speed little by little. That may help you regain you land legs.

Like the add one mile a week if already at 4. Good call. :thumbsup2

On to the TM....
I do feel unbalanced coming off that thing sometimes, but after a minute or so I am fine. I have trained for the Princess on a TM...yes, all my runs, but I only go to 10 miles. I am a wimp getting out in anything under 50 degrees. I will do 10 tomorrow on the TM. I have done 14 once when training for a full...that is an experience.

On another note...I found an old KTTW and it has a sticky note on it that says I have one park day left. Wonder if there is a way to find out if I really do. Anyone know?

Stay Healthy!

Good advice! PHM will be my 5th half and I've never ran more than 10 miles in training before a race. The spectators and the sites will pump you up enough to finish those last 3!

Can someone recommend a site where I can find colored sneaker covers, something to go completely over my sneaker to match my costume? Thank you!

Hi everyone! :wave2: I've been reading posts and great advice on here for a long time now and finally decided to join in. This will be my 4th Princess half and I'm doing the GSC this year too. It's become my favorite weekend of the year and I cannot wait for it to be here really soon!! :)
