Sweating means losing water and electrolytes--everyone's sweat is different (i.e. differently "salty"). At some point, it may lead to cramping. I've never had this problem, so I'm not really dialed into it.

When you initially mentioned GU, I assumed you were talking gels. But when you mention you mixed it with water in a bottle--are you using the Electrolyte Brew?

Rather than add a third bottle with something else in it--which seems like too much to keep track of--you could try salt tablets, or find a higher sodium/potassium mix product. If you can go to a store like REI and look at their nutrition products (they have a pretty good selection), a local running store, or even Google "electrolyte comparison chart". You'll get some results comparing various products out there.

Yeah, it's a little confusing, but that's why you start now. You'll get dialed in to something that works for you.

Maura

Thanks Maura! And you were correct in assuming gels, I dilute my GU gels in water, I really cant stand to eat them straight from the package. :confused3.

And I agree, a Third bottle seems a bit intimidating. So if I were to try a salt tablet, would that replace the idea of NUUNs?

- Heather

Yes the salt caps would take the place of NUUN. I know it seems like a lot but finding good balance with hydration/fuel will make a whole difference in your training.

Hammer Nutrition also makes a product that I think is called Endurolytes. It's electrolytes in a capsule. My naturopath suggested them for me as a way to get the needed sodium/potassium without the carbs if I'm getting carbs along the way in another form. There are probably other brands too.

I'm a great sweater (hey we all have to be good at something right?) I drink just water on runs 4 miles or less (if I have anything) at 5 miles I go to Powerade Zero (no calories, just electrolytes and liquid) by 7 I add jells and then usually try a combo of water/zero and regular Power ade. (depending on where I'm running and how I feel)

Have any of you ladies used hydration belts before? Hope about gel packs or chews? I have never run a distance more than 3 miles and was concerned about keeping myself hydrated.

What do you ladies do?

I bought an Amphipod full tilt belt and I really like it. I don't bring hydration to train until I hit 7+ miles so I don't use it often. For the race, I'll just use hydration stations, starting with water only and then switch to Powerade around mile 8 or 9 for one or two stops, then back to water since I despise Powerade/Gatorade, etc. I'll also bring along the Honey Stinger chews and pop 2-3 ever 30 minutes.

LOL, I have to agree with you on that...I have tried really hard to like Nuun and have tried several flavors but I just can't stand it! It tastes like chalky Alka Seltzer to me.

I agree! I hate water and need something strong flavored. This isn't strong enough for me and when I try to double the tablets or lessen the water, it becomes too salty

My BFF and I had a goal to run a 5K in every state. We realistically changed that to at least one mile in every state. My PERSONAL bucket list item is to get a medal from every Disney Run :cool1: so I am signed up for the Princess 1/2 (and this year, Jingle Jungle 5K, and also the 10K in January)

I AM JUST SO EXCITED and cannot wait for this. Ordering a running costume...hmm what to be....

Good for you, awesome goal! I'm trying to do "50 states by 50", a half marathon in all 50 states by the time I turn 50. I will be 40 in 1 month and have 5 states checked off the list, and soon to be 6 checked off in November! So 4 states a year and a couple of the years that I will need to do 5 states a year.

So much information!! You ladies are great! I am glad I found this thread or I would have been completely lost. Lol I appreciate all the help and advice. Now to go do some research. :)

Wow, what a cool goal! I would've loved to have been to all 50 states by the time I was 50!! At 54, I've been to less than 20 and some of those were only driving through! :drive:

I have a question about the expo. Do I need to get there Thursday to get anything good (ie new balance shoes, race merchandise) 94 are those things refreshed? I don't want to miss out but I really don't want to tack on an extra day either.

At previous expos, the New Balance people have divided their stock and had a certain number to sell each day, so if that remains true, you should be able to get a pair any day...provided you are there early enough. I'm pretty sure most of the race merch gets continually restocked as well...of course some things do sell out, like the Dooneys, but that has slowed down now that they are offered for pre sale.

What is this presale you speak of? Sorry if it's a dumb question. This is my first Disney race and I'm really excited.

Last year (I think?)...they started offering a pre-sale on the ever-popular commemorative Dooney bags. Prior to that, they were sold at the expo first come first serve and would sell out pretty fast...alot of them going to Dooney collectors and ebay resellers so alot of Princesses missed out on treating themselves to one. While they do still sell them at the expo, they've been doing a pre-sale...pretty much like the race registration through Active I think (I haven't ever ordered one through the pre sale). I want to say they will normally be available for that pre sale maybe a couple of months before race...someone else might know better on that one...but you just order and pay for it online and then you can pick it up during packet pick up...at least that's my understanding of how it works. I'm hoping they change the pattern design next year...I think it's been the same the last two years and I never really liked it that much personally. And speaking of purses...they finally announced a date yesterday of when the new Disney Vera Bradley bags are going to be avaialable in the parks...I wonder if we'll ever see a runDisney Vera??? :thumbsup2

How often do you run while training for a race? I am a new runner and am doing the Enchanted 10k. I plan to run my first 10k at the end of October to get a gauge on where I'm at and how much I need to improve to do the Princess Run.

Currently I'm following Jeff Galloway's program which includes a 30 minute run on Tuesdays and Thursdays (or walk/run in my case:rotfl:) and a longer run on Saturdays-- starting with 2 miles going up the the goal. My husband and son (natural athletes) don't think this is enough. They think I should be running at least 5 days a week.

Also, I do enjoy running but sometimes I need a break. I have been doing the P90X series and I love it. Do you think the P90X 60 minute lower body workout equals a 30 minute run? I'd like to through that in once and awhile when I just don't feel like going out or the weather is bad.

And thoughts/suggestions from experiences runners would be appreciated. :cheer2:

Ignore your husband and son. If you are following a plan to get you to a 10k distance, and it is working for you and your goal, then you are fine. As a new runner you want to ramp up slowly, and ALL runners should cross-train. I think you are doing just fine.

I have run 3x/week ONLY ever since I started running 5 years ago. That's what my plan is based on. And I have had good results with it--from 5k all the way to the Boston Marathon.

The last thing you want to do is run too much and get injured or get bored/aggravated with it.

Stay the course!

What she said. Jeff Galloway is a former Olympian and the trainer for runDisney. I think he knows what he's doing! I am on this program as well.
