If you think of it as the whole picture 80 lbs and 13.1 miles you are going to be over-whelmed and set yourself up for failure DON'T do this to yourself Take it ONE pound at a time and ONE mile at a time or even less Your goal is health and have fun doing it I was 224 years ago I am 181 now I want to be 160, more than the charts say I "should" be but where I feel the healthiest I am also coming off an injury that had me in physical therapy 9 to 10 hrs a week not counting home exercises I am not running yet, 2 weeks ago walking had me screaming in pain after a few yards Baby steps baby steps get good shoes and find a plan that will work for you You can do whatever you set your mind & heart on :cheer2:

Good advice! I've actually lost 30 since jan 1. 80 more would be ideal but I think even 30 more would put me in a lot better place!
As far as running, this is my plan-
Complete c25k
Run 5k in aug
Work on 10k
Run 10k in oct
Begin half training after 10k

Does that sound good?

:dance3: congrats on the 30 lost* ( * never to be found again !!! :) ) I'm not going to comment on your plan though as I am not experienced enough to do so My plan is walking and adding speed and endurance to that first We're in different places KWIM ? then doing Jeff Galloway Run/Walk/Run and see into local races when I feel I'm ready

Newbie here! I'm registered for the half, and I am so excited!! I am running my first 5K this Saturday, and plan on running a 10K in November. I am not very active, so this is exciting and scary at the same time! I did start training last week, and have been following all of the fantastic advice on this board (Thank you!) I'm looking forward to being on this journey with all of you ladies :)

Just a couple of questions:

1-How important is it to submit a 10k time? I put n/a, but now I'm not sure I should've done that.

2-I have a 2 year old son with special needs...does anyone know if there's a special waiting area for families who have special needs?

3-How far in advance should I book a room?

4-I signed my 6 yr old DD up to do the Saturday kids run. Is that run during the half marathon? I wanted to be there with her, but I realized that I may not be done in enough time. Anyone have any experience with that?

Thank you all so much! I don't post often, but I have found so many helpful things from this board. Everyone is so nice!

To all the newbies:

I actually am still a newbie, I started about 2 years ago with running, always hated it. Still "kind of" do. Please know that the most important step to this journey has already happened. You signed up. The next part is walking out the door and puting one foot in front of the other. Try and get out 3 times a week at least, no matter what the weather is like. Ok that's a stretch a little bit because when it is raining sideways in Oregon I sometimes will say "uhhh not gonna happen". BUT, I will get out the following day. I have made it a goal of mine that before I leave the house I will say "I'm doing 4 miles today" or whatever the goal is and in 2 years of doing this I have never come home before my goal of the day. Even if I am dead dog tired, I at the very least will walk the rest of the way.

Do not try to be a time or even a pace in the beginning. Get to know your body and how it works when you are out there. Listen to it. Also, know that you WILL hurt at times. Go to Target and buy a calendar. Write "Running Journal" on the outside of it. Dont use it for anything else! This is your journal. Not your kids karate lesson schedule or when to pick up your husbands dry cleaning calendar. This is your spot to write down how many miles you completed for that day, the time you did it in. How you felt, knees hurting, write it down, felt great, write it down, new shoes, write it down. You will come to cherish this calendar and how you have improved over time.

Schedule a 5k race NOW. Dont wait, get it in your running calendar. No excuses. Have a mini goal that is staring you in the face that you need to work up to. Then schedule a 10k. I always train better when a monster is chasing me (meaning that 10k that is scheduled in a week).

This is about you. This is way more mental then it is physical. When mile 10 hits you at the half marathon, if you are like me, you will be asking for a lightning bolt to hit you and put you out of your misery. You then take a deep breath, keep moving, and then mile 11 is there.....

Bottom line.... DIG DEEP. It's my mantra. It's what I scream inside my head when I'm wimping out. I have it tattooed on my wrist and look at it everytime I go out. Find your mantra. Own it.

Now get out there and get those miles!

So true about the calendar. I also note my periods. I have awesome runs a day or two before my period. Sorry maybe a little TMI but whatever helps.

I've walked many 1/2 marathons but adding running is new for me so I'm still a newbie!

One of the things I learned from my first training group it to just get out there on your training days. I still remember my coach telling us even when we didn't want to go out, just get dressed and put on your shoes and go out for 5 minutes. If after 5 minutes you still don't want to be out there, turn around and go home. I don't think that ever happened, it's getting out the door that it the hardest part!

Ok. My friend and I just signed up. Yay! I am totally new to running so I am hoping to run/ walk it. Sooooo excited! Does anyone know which resorts are the " hosts"? How soon can we book rooms? Should we book thru Disney direct? I usually book through my AAA travel agent for the discount. Do registrants get special rates? Want to start the planning.... And training of course!!!

Sounds like a great plan to me! You have goals set which is a great! And they are goals that are totally attainable. That is how I started running, set a goal of 5k, then 10k then a half. I will say that the hardest one was the 5k. It got easier after the 5k, and making it to 10k was enjoyable, and not as much work as making it to a 5k. Training for the half was fun. training through miles 8-10 was challenging (probably since I did it in the heat of the summer also)

Way to set goals and attain them. And great job dropping 30lbs!

How many days before are you guys going? We will probably arrive on the Sunday before...looking at the training schedule my long run will be the Sat before. We are travelling from Ireland so this will give us a few days to adjust to the time difference.

Also I did not order any extras when signing up...pins necklace etc...are these available at the expo?

love this! (and all the other great advice!!) my usual mantra while running is "you can f'n do this! (only the real "F" word ) said it several times on Sunday running a 10K while tackling a *#&@! hill ( I HATE hills ) Adding DIG DEEP to my self motivation now!! Thanks!

Does that sound good?

This very reasonable, assuming that the overall weekly mileage for the transition from 5k to 10k and 10k and 1/2 plans isn't excessive, i.e. you just want to gradually increase your mileage with no jumps bigger than ~10%.

I am doing the same thing plan-wise.

Newbie here! I'm registered for the half, and I am so excited!! I am running my first 5K this Saturday, and plan on running a 10K in November. I am not very active, so this is exciting and scary at the same time! I did start training last week, and have been following all of the fantastic advice on this board (Thank you!) 2-I have a 2 year old son with special needs...does anyone know if there's a special waiting area for families who have special needs?

Thank you all so much! I don't post often, but I have found so many helpful things from this board. Everyone is so nice!

1-If you don't submit a time, they will assume a longer race finish time and put you in the back corral(s). If you plan to walk, this is not such a big deal (assuming you have no issues maintaining race pace of 16mpm) If you intend to run, I would strongly suggest submitting a proof of time from your 10k(before Dec 1). They will covert this to estimated 1/2 finish time and place you in the appropriate corral. As an fyi, you can find a race finish time estimator calculator (Runner's World has one) and calculate various distance finish times based on a single input (e.g. can use 5k time to roughly estimate 10k, 1/2 etc)

2-Don't know about that one.

3-You can book a hotel room now if you want. You will have to do a one night deposit at current rack rate and then later if/when discounts come out you can adjust the price (if hotel/room category are available at the discount price) If you have your heart set on a specific resort, the advice is book now (assuming you can afford the one night deposit) just to be on the safe side. Room-only ressies have typically had a 5 day cancellation window, so there is plenty of time to cancel.

4- The half marathon is on Sunday, not Saturday.

Hope that helps.

Maura

--All resorts are host resort

--You can book rooms now--at rack rate. When discounts come out you can modify your reservation assuming resort/room category are available at discount.

--Your choice as to booking agent. Note that you CAN get AAA discount directly through Disney when it is released. Sometimes it's a matter of who has inventory of resort/room choices available. 2014 rates are net yet available, nor are any discounts, so if you book now--regardless of through whom--you will be quoted current rack rate.

--No special discounts for participants. And that means on tickets, too, which is a change from previous years. So the only discount would be whatever hotel discount might be on offer for general public or AP holders.

Happy planning!

Maura

questions re: the end of the race....
At the end of the race is there a place to grab water/gatorade and something to eat? It will just be DD and I traveling alone so no one to meet us at the finish line with something to eat/drink. I'm sure there is right?

I doubt we will sign up for the race retreat package. It's DD and I running together, so RR x2 = to much $$$

The things I worry about, really! Plus, when DD convinced me to do this, she orginally talked about the 10K (Saturday) then at the last minute changed to the 1/2 (Sunday) which is all good....except that I need to be home Sunday night, soooo.... we are also checking out of our hotel that day and flying home that evening. It's going to be a long day.....:upsidedow

Just trying to think through the logistics of it all! lol

No worries! There is water, bottles of Powerade, bananas, and snack boxes for free at the finish line. And you will be done in the morning with plenty of time to go back to your room, pack, and check out before noon deadline.

Not to put more pressure on you, but if you are staying on-site, I think all of the Disney resorts have an 11:00 check-out time. You can request late check out, but I don't think that is guaranteed until after you check in. If I had to be out of my room on Sunday, I would have everything ready and packed on Saturday before I went to bed, so after the race I would just take a quick shower and go.

thanks, that was my plan, we are only arriving on Friday so not much to unpack and repack again anyway! I will definitely request late check out as well and hope for the best.

In my experience, the extras (pins/necklaces/purses) have been available at the expo. Just make sure you go early on the first day it's open if there is something you definitely want as some items do sell out quickly.
