This is where correct corral placement come into play. Those speedy gals are out front then come the slower runners followed by the fast walkers and then the slower walkers. Everyone gets to enjoy as all the groups travel around the course with matched paces and faster ones are gone like the wind and the rest just follow along. And for those run /walkers it is important when you get ready for your walk cycle too just move to either side and slow.

I was going to ask...
What exactly is the proper etiquette for when you walk or are transitioning to the walk part of your interval? Do you signal with your hand? Move to left, right, or any side? Likewise, when you start running again, what is considered courteous and proper on the course? Just move over to the center and go for it? I may be a newbie walker-runner, but I certainly don't want to look like I'm one or, worse yet, come across as rude.

Hi everyone! I'm one of those dreaded Disney Walkers....I have done it twice 2014 will be my THIRD race. I have trained to the best of my ability for each race. I stay as far to the right as possible the entire race. I walk about a 14min mile and feel every bit entitled to be there as any runner- I sincerely hope we can ALL relax and enjoy the race for what it is - FUN! There is room for everyone! Maybe someday Disney will either make a separate race or start time for us walkers but until then let's just ALL BE KIND AND ACCEPTING - After all that's what makes a TRUE PRINCESS! Can't wait to see everyone (Now just send some Pixie Dust my way to heal the stress fracture in my right heel ASAP!❤️) Thanks!

That is some seriously fast walking!! I hope you heal quickly. :flower3:

I'm so glad you posted this! I am a 'walker' too but decided against the Princess half this year bc I wasn't sure others would be walking. We pace about the same as you. Most of our 5k times have been around 45 min. I walked my first 10k in April and was almost able to keep that pace the whole time, however I'm not sure I could've kept it up for another 3-4 miles? I'm glad to know its do-able and I wouldn't be the only walker!

Awww SRUAMN I hope you will reconsider and walk the PHM! It really is the most amazing experience! C'mon join the rest of us walkers!

Apple orchard: You are very sweet to say that, but I watch all you runners pass me by! I really enjoy the sayings on the backs of your shirts!!

I treat it like driving...pull over to the right, looking behind you as you move over. When ready to get back in, look over your shoulder first and merge! Really, as long as you don't just stop in the middle of the road, you're usually fine.

Ha hahahaha!

another idea when slowing for a walk interval is to slow behind someone already walking and start walking (always check behind you just in case) but if you are slowing behind walkers an alert runner shouldn't run into you. Just don't get so close to the walkers they think you're a stalker LOL. Often, this works best as the only place to run is on the side of the road (either side) especially when the road narrows out the back side of the MK.

I agree.
No one will look like a newbie and there are no dumb questions.
I once stopped short going through a water stop (not at the princess) and some guy nearly tripped over the back of me. I felt bad and could see he was a bit irritated, all I could do was say sorry and move one. I learned, now I get my cup and keep moving until the end of the area and then pull over or slow down to drink.

This. I treat the entire run as if I were driving. Whether it's moving to the side to begin walking, it's going around someone else, or at water stops, I ALWAYS do a quick check over whichever shoulder is on the side I'm going to go.

In addition to the tip to wait until the end of the water stop to slow down/stop, make sure you're checking behind you as you move to the side, before you reach for a cup, AND (most importantly to me anyway!) before you toss your cup. I've had to dodge a few cups being tossed directly at my feet from people beside me. I don't want anyone to have wet socks! :) And another water stop tip while on the subject: there are multiple tables for a reason! Skip the first table; it will naturally be more crowded just because it's everyone's first instinct to go there. :)

Hi ladies (and at least one gentleman!),

I ran the Philly half on Sunday which means after a week or two of recovery, ITS GSC TIME! Woo!

:)

Now that Philly is behind me and I've sent in my proof of time, I am excited to run again. I had a time goal for Philly so training wasn't necessarily fun. I plan to take my time and really enjoy Disney though so the training runs hopefully won't be as stressful for me because I'm not going to PR. What a nice feeling to have going into it!

This thread is really starting to pick up as it gets closer. The next three months are really going to fly by, I just know it. :)

I agree about correct coral placement, but what about those of us who have a time that places us in a decent coral, then gets injured...now may not be as fast - should they give up their spot and voluntarily move back and risk not having enough time to finish?
That was me this year. I was very tempted to move back a couple corrals because I knew I'd be walking almost all of the first few miles, but a lot of rD veterans strongly encouraged me to stay where I was placed (C). I'm really glad I listened to them! I did start in the very back of C, so as not to jam up anyone in the corral. The benefits of that were awesome: my friend and I had the whole course to ourselves for a while after we crossed the start line and until the really fast runners of D caught up, even when the corrals behind us started to pass, things were spread out enough that we all had plenty of space to maneuver, we didn't block anyone, and at the halfway point, when I felt injury-free and able to really pick up my pace, I only had a minimal amount of zig-zagging to do to get around slower folks. So, yeah - I say stick to your assigned corral and start toward the back of it! :thumbsup2

Not a 100% sure but I think all those pace group were in corral A last year. If we had pace groups...did we have pace groups? Pretty sure all sub 2 hour estimates were in corral A
I don't remember seeing any official pace groups, either. Some unofficial ones, though.

Here's what I've seen in my rD experiences: there is NO set rule that everyone follows. So my approach is to just be vigilant about knowing my surroundings; no zoning out. When it's time for a walk interval, I've usually already scoped out a space to slide into, often behind others who are already walking. Sometimes that's on the right side, sometimes the left, and often, in the last few miles, in the center. I don't judge - I just follow the masses, lol! The way I see it, if 5 people are already walking across the center, me going to the right just blocks more of the course for runners behind me. Better to do it "wrong" and be more mindful of others than to follow a "rule" kwim? If it's crowded and I know there are folks within a few feet behind me, I'll raise a hand, just as an alert that I'm about to move over and/or slow down. When it's time to run again, I've, again, already scoped things out and have ID'd a spot to slide into. Sometimes all of this means walking or running a few seconds later than my alert, or sometimes skipping a walk or run interval altogether. Better to be safe.

I'll add this: don't walk ALL the way to the right or left. Leave a little space for the fasties who want to run the tangents. :thumbsup2

Absolutely not the only walker - TONS of folks walk Disney races! Hope you'll reconsider. princess:

::yes:: I'm mentally EXHAUSTED after races, just from the constant awareness of my surroundings and anticipating where others are likely to go!

I leave mine at home and enjoy the experience and I would encourage other to leave the music and phone at "home". Can't believe it is sunny and 75 outside today..at least where I live. I got a nice surprise outside run in this morning.
Totally jealous about the temps for your run!! Mine was about 37° and windy!! I'm still trying to warm up!! As far as my phone, I have to have Maroon 5 in my ear! I HATE the sound of breathing. But, I wear only one earbud so I can hear what's going on around me.

I use music during training as I run alone or on the TM. I, too, only use one earbud..in fact I actually cut off one.

After the first 3 miles, I find, for the most part, there are plenty of distractions on the disney course. I am also a talker and am not afraid to say something to other along the course...usually just an encouraging word.

Thanks Joan and PrincessV! My races usually involve entirely unofficial "pacers" that I select myself, like the runner in the Minnie skirt at the Disneyland 10K, or the runner I met at a local 10K after running with her the entire race, or the guy in the banana suit at the quarter marathon last month! I was thinking about a Garmin just for races, but then I saw this on the runDisney website:

The CLIF BAR Pace Team

The CLIF BAR Pace Team will be returning as this year's "official" Disney Princess Half Marathon pace team.

Here's How It Works:
Each Pace Leader will run even splits (every mile will be run in the same amount of time) throughout the race.
By following your Pace Team leader, you'll cross the finish line in under two minutes of your goal time.
Pace Teams will be provided for the following finish times:

Princess Half Marathon - :40, 1:50, 2:00, 2:15, 2:30, 2:45, and 3:00
Mickey & Minnie Mouse Royal 5K - TBD

Meet Your Pacer at the Expo
Meet your Pace Team leader before the race at the Disney Fit for a Princess Expo.
Learn about your Pacer's marathon experience; insights on staying hydrated during the race; and assorted tips.
Get your free Pace Band from a Pace Leader.

Where to Meet on Race Day
On race morning, pace leaders will be lined up according to their pace and holding signs with their finish times. Join your appropriate pace group.

Thinking about following one of these pacers . . . or buying a Garmin . . . or finding another banana who looks like he's running the right pace for me!

I have a garmin (the new 620) and I know it helps keep me focused. My DD ran her last race with a pace runner and she finally broke 2:30 for the half. I mostly kept with a 2:45 pace runner and it helped push a new PR for me. I still wouldn't run without my garmin, though. I didn't see any pace runners last year but that doesn't mean they weren't there. I'm hoping to see them this year. But remember pace runners won't be stopping for pictures.

Hey no dreaded walkers!! I have much respect for power walkers. I was once mowed down completely by a 70 yr old power walker and I was running :rotfl2:
I hope you heel heals (mouth full) quickly!!

Thanks me too I'm getting very nervous not training - may have to skip the 10k - to ATLEAST compete in the PHM -

Congrats on Philly! That was my first half, and four half marathons later its still my favorite!
