I have my Garmin "alert" me or beep at me at every mile, it gives me my split time or pace for that mile. I find it helpful to keep me on whatever pace I am using that day for training. ALso helpful at races, especially if they have a time limit.

So, is it a pedometer, too? And keeps track of miles as well as time?

Yes, they do! And some can do your homework too! j/k, seriously though, some are really fancy! I would love one, but the pocketbook is shaking it's head at me.. so i guess i will just hang around the back of the pack with those who have them! LOL

OK, here it is...
A pedometer keeps track of your steps and can estimate your distance, but you have to calibrate it with your step distance.
THere are watches, for example Timex, that you get input interval for it to beep if you are doing a walk/run program - like walking for so many minutes and then running for so many minutes and has a stopwatch for total time, etc.
THen there are watches that have heart rate monitors.
Garmin is GPS - the company that started it all with global positioning devices. They started with hikers, boaters, etc. Then they came up with a GPS you could wear on your wrist. The most recent model is much smaller thatn the original. It has features that include, total time of the workout, distance (hence GPS) intervals, vitual workout partners, ability to download info to your computer, etc. To learn more go to the website www.garmin.com

I'm sure that's not everything, but most of what I know.

I have a Garmin Forerunner 101. It's pretty basic, but it gets the job done for me. It was about $90 at Target. It tracks pace, mileage, intervals, etc. It does not have a heart rate monitor. I am obsessed with checking it during my run. I am the one you will see at the back of the pack staring at my watch! :)

Tracy, BTW - beautiful photo site!! I only hope i am smiling as much as you were at mile 12!! LOL

Wow, I love learning something new.

Thanks to everyone for chiming in.

You go girl - get er done!! Just keep putting that one foot in front of the other and before you know it 7 miles will be a breeze!! ( they more you do it - the easier it becomes - its hard at the begining, just remember how you felt when you had to do 3 or 4 miles?)

We are on the same schedule and I am also nervous. I may switch Saturday & Sunday though. We are heading to my MIL's tomorrow and I'm not sure when we'll get home. However, we did the 6 miles last week and it is only one mile more this week. :cheer2: :cheer2:

I'd love one but I can't see very well without my glasses and I can't wear my glasses when I run..fogging issues and sweat etc. I'm sure they must be nice. I use the nike plus which I can program for distance or time. I'd love to talk but must dash as we are on the road (6 hours) for Nana's funeral (Monday).

I'm to be at WDW next Wednesday night after a 9 hour drive. Thursday I have a solo trip to MK planned while DH and DS play golf.

Hey gang. Back from Marathon week, it was alot of fun. This was my worst 1/2 marathon time ever but considering I did not train at all I was happy to finish. Time to get serious for this one. Want to improve a bit on my time at still have fun and get it done.

Can't wait to get back to disney.

thanks! :thumbsup2 It's true.. I remember training for the minnie 5k, and how it felt to start training, and it was such an accomplishment the week i did 2 miles, and then 3... wow.. now 3 miles is my minimum, lol..

Welcome back!!! Any tips/advice?? :)

Vicki - true, if we did 6 last week, what's another mile! :goodvibes

No I am the wrong person to ask for advise since I went in way undertrained but didn't go for any particular time just wanted to finish and when I realized at about mile 1 that I was going to finish in plenty of time I pulled back a bit so I wouldn't be sucking air at the end:crazy2:

Just have fun with it, disney events are like no other. Many teamates to cheer you on along the way. It is alot of fun.

Hi ya ladies! Good luck with the miles this weekend! I too have 7 to do but not sure if I can. I am still fighting the flu. Haven't done anything this week! :guilty: I have been sleeping as much as I can in the hopes I will have some energy. Well, I am going to take some more Sudafed and gte back in bed. Have a nice weekend everyone! Stay warm!!!

The Disney Marathon last weekend was WONDERFUL! But, I seem to have a stress fracture (or similar) in my right foot. D'oh! I really would like to encourage Jen to do the 1/2 so:

What are male WISHers doing for the Princess half? Running (after 7 weeks of recoup I should be able to walk it)? Forming a cheer group? Or should I volunteer (as if that's any *less* walking)?

Thanks!
Butch

I did it! I walked seven miles. :cheer2: Man, that was far! LOL

As far as the male wishers, my DH :groom: is walking with me. :goodvibes
