Okay...I've got yet MORE questions...this time about racing in general...

1. Swollen hands...I've noticed that after about half a mile, my hands begin to feel tight and dry...to the point that my wedding rings which are usually loose, no longer fit. ACK!! Any suggestions for how to move the fluid back out of my hands? I've tried to keep my arms bent and swinging, tried clenching and un-clenching my fists in time to my steps, and even resorted to walking half a lap with my arms above my head, flapping my hands about in desperation. HELP? I'm getting to the point of considering those compression gloves for burn victims!!

2. Stingy legs....I shaved yesterday and today the light sheen of sweat on my legs was enough to make them feel like they were doused in acid. Anyone else have that issue? Any suggestions?

3. I'm going to do a 'preparatory' 1/2 marathon locally in November. As a novice, what things do y'all suggest would be good as far as clothing and 'gear'. What things can't y'all live without? Bearing in mind this is November in Georgia, so think 40-60degrees outside temp.

Okay...I'll try to limit my questions today to just these three.

As for the workout... I did a mile in 20 minutes. *sigh* I just can't seem to break that unless I jog a bit...but my body is really not up for that yet. I mean, even at my 3.20 a lap pace (our track is 6.5 laps to the mile) my heart rate nearly hit my max (156 out of 157). And I think my max HR should actually be a bit lower due to my weight.

Oh well...I've got 5 months...I'm sure things will work out and I can be a proper princess with the rest of you!

Cheers.

Hi. I don't post much here, and I'm not even officially signed up for the half yet, but I've now been running for a year, and am running a half marathon in November (just ran 10 miles on Saturday). So, take my advice for what it's worth. ;)

1. Swollen hands - I say drink more water, and this should improve in cooler temperatures. My hands swell even without running whenever I haven't had enough water and/or it is hot out.

2. Stingy legs - although it doesn't happen to me, I know what you are talking about. There are lotions that supposedly help razor burn, might help your situation.

3. Gear in various temps - I've always heard (and follow) dress as though it is 20 degrees warmer. So, if it's going to be 60 dress like you would going outside in 80 degrees. Which to me, isn't much. I'd wear a skort and sports bra and tank shirt (wicking). A hat or sunglasses for sun. In 40 degrees, I would probably wear a short sleeve shirt (wicking) and MAYBE running pants. But probably still the skort. You will be cool when you start, but it's better than being HOT while you do the race.

As for pace - I've always heard increasing your distance naturally increases your speed. You shouldn't really work on speed as a newbie. This was definitely true for me. I started running last year at a pace that was probably the same as my walking pace. Just kept increasing distance, and not worrying about pace. I am now a good 2-3 minutes per mile faster than I was then.

KEep at it! You can do it!! :thumbsup2

Thanks so much for the pep talk!! I am going to be heading out later tonight (ya, probably in the dark) b/c the weather is just beautiful!!! (and i promised my dad that i would bid on something that ends at 7pm on ebay for him) so, right after that, i am going to head out and do 3mi.

I think i will try to do outdoors for now, at least til November, when i do my 14 week MFM plan, then i will decide..

Travel: I am flying in Thursday night (landing in MCO at about 9pm) and staying at the POLY. We are leaving Monday after dinner.
I haven't thought much about ADR's yet, since we can't make them due to the new system.. Plus, i am so concentrated on my Nov. trip, i haven't given it any thought to March!
Since me and my dd and my MIL all have AP's, we will probably be at the parks more..
I don't think my mom or my sis will be doing the parks at all, except for the P&P party that Sunday night (we all got tix to that).
So, my schedule will prob. look something like this:
Thursday - arrive, head to the POLY, get a snack and go to bed. LOL
Friday- Head over to WWOS for packet pick up (hoping they let me just pick up dd's kids race thing without her having to tag along..) Then, I will probably head over to MK later that night. (actually, i see that MK is only open til 8pm friday. what gives with that??! Maybe i will do Epcot instead, that is open til 11pm due to EMH)
Saturday- hmmm... (day before doomsday -- 'er i mean raceday), I think the kids races are Sat. a.m. so i will have to head over to Epcot with dd again.. probably hit Test Track too.. since we are there.. LOL ;) then, if it's nice, probably come back at lunch time and just CHILL out, and collect my thoughts..
Sunday -- race, then rest. Then PARTY LIKE THERE IS NO TOMORROW -- and show off my bling!! LOL
Monday-- hit MK early, then come back after lunch and veg before going to Airport.. :(

And hopefully somewhere in there, book our next race!! ( I would still love to do the ToT race!)

I would also love to figure out how / where to meet up with some of ya! I definately invite anyone who wants to come over to the Poly to have a drink! (ahhhgghmmm lauren! ;) )

BTW- Welcome GRumpy Girl! I am going to add your name!

Christine, i fixed your resort on the first page now to CBR. :)

If i goofed or missed anyone else, please lmk via pm! Thanks!!

Thanks, Stacy! Hope you did not think I was being snarky with you!

How was your run? Or, are you a walker? Either way, I hope you enjoyed the great outdoors for your workout!

BTW, Stacy, I thought I posted this the other day, but I guess I didn't hit the reply button. I bought a TM from Sears back in April. At the time I was looking, Sears had 3-4 nice TM's on sale each week. Sometimes even a Same as cash offer for a year. So, I am thinking that if you were to look at TM's, you might find that you can get one for around the same $$ you would spend on a gym membership. I think I remember NordicTrak.com having free shipping on some of their models...

Christine, thanks! I will check into that!

I actually went outdoors last night in the dark, and did my 3 miles, combo of walk/run.. did more walking, as it's been awhile, but my time was 46:30.. So, i am sure i can get my time down once i am "use" to the course.. i have some killer hills i have to go up!! Ugh.. but i figure if i can train on them, i will be in good shape for the WDW course!

Didn't want to go to the gym after work today but hubby encouraged me to go as I'd be mad at myself if I didn't. As usual, he was right. I hopped on a TM thinking I'd do an easy mile then head home....I went easy but got into my music and watching the students around me interacting (I teach at a university and use the gym there)...anyway...before I knew it, I was nearly at the 2 mile mark and I'd hardly noticed it!! And, unlike when I was exercising over the summer, my feet didn't go numb (I'm doing my laces more loosely) and my calves didn't scream once through the whole thing.

I'm starting to see that maybe I can do this after all!

Thanks for the encouragement gang!! :thumbsup2

Good going Alphabetsoup!!!! That's the way to do it. It feels good when yourealize that some you used to do was hard and then it becomes easy. It's all the effort and work that you put in and it shows!!! Just remember that in the future when 3 or 4 miles seems hard. Just keep at it!!

Tracy

Hey SOUP that is great for you!!!!!:cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2: keep it up and no doubt you will do this!!!!!

Good Morning Ladies!!!!!!!

Been consistant with my walking lately which is great since I have a 1/2 marathon on Sept 28th:scared1: Been dealing with horrible shin splints so I am starting my walk out really slow which seems to be helping which won't be possible on race day so I will have to just walk around alot before the start.

Anyone have any ideas for meets??? I know it is way in the future but was wondering about AP's etc so just thought I would throw it out there.

Hope you all had great training last night!!!!

Could do a meet at POP or at the Port Orleans Riverside like we did for the Minnie 15K? Maybe like on Saturday around 4/4:30/or 5pm. Would give people time to do a dinner res later on in the evening if they wanted. Just a quick get together and to take photos!!! WOuld last maybe 1/2 hour to an hour????
Or could meet at a park in one of the bigger eating areas like over by the noodle station near tomorrowland.

You guys throw out some options.

Tracy

The friend I am traveling with has been to all of the parks except AK, and she only has one day to do parks...Saturday. So, we will be at AK, maybe until close at 5, not sure. I figured we'd head back to the hotel (CBR) at that point. I was stumped trying to come up with a pasta place for dinner, then I realized that we can order from one of the pizza places that deliver to the resorts...I think I remember seeing pasta on their menu. Then, it is early to bed for us! I had been thinking that if anyone else was at CBR they may want to join us for such an extravagant meal.... but from the list on page 1 I didn't see that anyone else would be staying there.

Most resorts and restaurants will usually be offereing some kind of a pasta dish the night before the event. They do that in Jan so I don't see why they wouldn't for the March event.

Tracy

POR was a nice place for the meet. What about Earl at DTD?
I'll have a car and APs so I'm pretty much good for anywhere!

Me too, well I have AP's and a friend with a car;)

I think we met at the Earl for the Minnie back in 2007. There is a fair size area there.

I am a big fan of Earl! And, I want to keep my dining pretty mellow that evening...

This will be my first Disney marathon event. Can any of you vets tell me how frequent the transportation is to the expo and how early will busses run the morning of the event?
