DH and I are thinking of taking a trip down to look at areas to retire to. Need some ideas of what towns to travel to. Looking to acquire some land, hopefully near the water. Lake water that is not the shoreline (I'm sure that would be to dear). Any suggestions would be most appreciated!

Lots of folks are retiring to our mountain areas. The Asheville region is popular -and quite a beautiful place to live. Further west, development is just beginning around Fontana Lake. If you want to be close to a metropolitan area (bigger than Asheville anyway) you might try looking around Lake Norman -near Charlotte, or Jordan Lake -near Raleigh. Prices will be relatively high at either of these. More rural possibilities in the piedmont (central part of state) are High Rock Lake and Badin Lake -both part of the same chain of lakes.
