Hi, I'm hoping to get some helpful suggestions for things to do and places to eat and stay in Salem and Plymouth in mid-September. We'll have 1 1/2 days in Salem and 2 1/2 in Plymouth. Thanks very much!:)

There's a great mom and pop place off of RT-58 (main street in carver).

I can't recall the name of it now, but its across the street from the dance studio, sew-it-all plaza.

In Plymouth, do the plantation.

If you are going in September/October

its a bit cheesy, but decent fun.

Avoid eating at Plimouth Plantation. Blech.

In Salem, consider the Peabody-Essex Museum.

Personally, I don't see spending more than a day at Plymouth, but can see spending three days at Salem.

Plenty to see in Salem,House of Seven Gables,Witch Museum and for a nice quick meal and some great popcorn Salem Willows.

More Plymouth folks will most likely be dropping by.....my ideas for Plymouth depend on time of day and pricing.

I like Cabby Shack on the waterfront. It has a nice view. Food takes a little bit of time to come out when ordered. Love the chowder. Average prices.

If you are looking for classic fried clams, I would try Lobster Hut on the waterfront. Average prices.

If you are looking for something fancier then I would try Roo Bar (in the Old Cordage Park), Sabor by Daniella's Cafe (Court Street, 3A), there is another good one on Court Street same area, just can't remember the name.

I have never been to Salem but just went to Plymouth last weekend. One day is plenty in Plymouth - we went to the Plantation and the Mayflower. My kids got bored quickly - 3 & 11. Also , we got our passes at the library so it was only $5.00 adult and $4.00 for my 11 year old to get in.

If you have time maybe check out Edaville Railroad - if you have kids I have not been in a while but that looks like a nice day.

Edaville Railroad is about 12 miles from the main attractions in Plymouth or about a 25 min drive.

Have fun whatever you decide to do. It is a beautiful time of year to visit :goodvibes

I have no advice for Salem, but as far as Plymouth goes . . . If you're looking for a Tommy Bahama-hang out kind of atmosphere, I second the vote for the Cabby Shack. Outstanding home-made pizza! I would steer you away from Lobster Hut - small portions/overpriced. Isaac's is MUCH better!! Elegant atmosphere without the upscale price - and a great view of the harbor.

I knew I could count on all of you! A lot of great suggestions...please keep them coming. How about some places to stay? King's Faire sounds a lot like the NY Renaissance Faire...anyone been to both and can compare? We are going to the NY Faire so if it's the same, we could skip the MA one without much guilt. We are trying to do some family ancestry in Plymouth (we married into the Brewster family) so I'm hoping to do some off-the-beaten-path stuff like grazing the graveyards etc... It won't be our first time in Plymouth; far from it but it has been a while. It is however our first time in Salem and being the mother of a teenage artistic daughter, there is much interest here! Thanks again everyone! Can't wait to go.:yay:

In Plymouth, there a couple of decent places to stay.

John Carver Inn - Very quaint, has a great indoor pool with a slide
Radisson - Typical, decent hotel - they also have a pool, high speed internet etc.

As for dining, I would recommend The Lobster Hut which is on the waterfront. A great place to get a good lobster roll. The Weathervane is also on the waterfront and is great for a sit down seafood meal. If you like Tex Mex, Sam Diego's in downtown Plymouth is yummy. And don't miss out on ice cream at Peaceful Meadows, near the waterfront!

As for things to do, my favorite thing to do is actually free. Right on the water is a long jetty you can walk out on to. It's nice to just be on the water.

There are also a number of boat tours you can take from the harbor, including a sunset cruise, a lunch/dinner cruise, whale sightseeing cruises, and even a "pirate cruise".

Good luck and have fun!

we stayed at the John Carver Inn a few years ago and it was nice and easy walking distance to the water but not right there. We did a nighttime lantern ghost tour that met at the hotel that was interesting. Rockafellers in Salem is supposed to be good and has coupons at restaurant.com and is located in the touristy area. I've never stayed overnight in Salem.

If traveling with children, do the John Carver. The pool has been rated one of the top hotel pools. It is close to downtown.

Plymouth is in the middle of a boom. A Hilton Garden Inn opened up just off exit 5 and a Hampton opened up just off exit 7. Lots of shops near both. Colony Place is due to open in September. Lots of choices!
