Roemama - A kelly day is the day they pick that whenever their shift falls on that day ( Rick's is Tuesday ) they don't work. So he worked 24 hours on Saturday..got off Sunday at 8am is off Sunday and Monday, Kelly day Tuesday, then off Wednesday and Thursday. He will go back for 24 hours on Friday AM. Shifts rotate..24 on 48 off...I like it, but it can be wearing..

He gets off at 8am on Friday April 30th..the day we leave for Disney. I always like to be on the road by 7am so I can get to the parks when they open. And the girl that was suppose to work for him on Sunday now wants to back out..that is the bad thing about being a Battalion Chief, there are only a few people that can take your shift for you. Bah..now I am rambling..

ps - I am an office manager for a construction company.

I have a question for all you ladies that have volunteer fireman husbands like mine.

Has your husband become obsessed w/ the type of blue lights he has on his vehicle???? This is my husbands truck, a Ford Explorer Sport Trac, he has strobe lights on his head lights & back lights, blue light on top, blue strobe light on dash, and loud horn that he honks while going through an intersection to tell people to move over. You can see him coming from a mile away. The other guys on the dept. wait for him to go by on the street so they can follow right behind him since he has all the lights.

He definitly gets teased about this at the FD.:)

My DH used to have blue lights for his vehicle. He has since taken them off. He doesn't use one. There are lots of guys that still have them, though. I guess some members were getting reprimanded by neighbors, etc., for speeding, etc. and now he doesn't want to have a blue light so that Joe Public doesn't complain. (kinda silly, I know).

So, Slo, I can't comiserate with you this time!!! :(

Little bit of useless knowledge for you...did you know that in some states, Like Virginia and North Carolina...the POLICE vehicles have blue lights...so they are Illegal there. We went to NC outer banks and saw quite a few VFF with their bar lights covered and taped. It was kinda funny.

Betsy, thanks for the explanation...I knew I had heard the term before, just not EXACTLY what it meant!!! How great that he is a Battalion Chief. That's so impressive but I see how hard it could be to get someone to cover for vacations.

How exciting that your going to Disney soon...wish it was me. Got any room in your suitcase??? ::yes::

I guess no one else is stopping by tonight. Night all. It's been a long day!!!

Good night:D My bed will be a little less crowded tonight--just me and the 2 little ones:teeth: Tomorrow night it will be all 4 of us again:crazy:

Christy

My husband has his weekly meeting tonight, so I have been alone w/ my girls all night, but he will be home soon - with stories to tell I'm sure.

Good night all!!!

Morning all...

Slo, remember how we were talking about structure fires and my DH missing them..... Well, Just had a house fire called out this morning just as he is leaving for work. I then hear #%#)#@ (add your favorite expletive here) and he says, "call my work and tell them I'll be late". I hate when I have to do that, I feel like his mother or something!!! ;)

Gotta work now. Hope you gals had a good night... See you gals later.

I know what you mean. I have had to call DH in at night, because he is on a call. At least he is given 24 hours a year (3 days) that he can take for fire calls (paid). Have a blessed day, all! May our men be safe.

Well...BC has it's advantages.. I no longer have to worry about him going INTO a structure fire..he is the Command unit..but he did get sideswiped in the Command Van on the way to a fire...Flipped it completely over...he was hanging upside down by his seatbelt ( thank god he was wearing it ). The guys teased him because here he is, hanging upside down and as calmly as you can be, he gets on the radio " Battalion 98, I have been hit, please send a unit for extrication"

I have the pictures...he was very lucky!

WEll, it's good to see that I'm not alone, Jeanne. My DH doesn't get sick days, etc., but he does make up his own schedule and is salary (which he works more than 40 hours) so they kind of let him be since he is performing a service to the community. HIs boss even lets him sometimes leave if is later in the day and he has a structure fire.

******************

Betsy, WOW!!! Glad to hear that your DH is okay. It's funny how calm those guys can be. I hope he wan't hurt. My Dad is the Fire Coordinator for the County we live in so he does alot of the running of fire scenes, too. I am glad, too, that he no longer goes into fires. My dad is a calm guy, too, always has been. I guess you have to be when your in a position such as these guys are. (I, on the other hand, did not get any of his "calmness" it went all to my FF brother, LOL).

I have a funny story to tell too. MY DH is next in line to be a chief in our FD. So, one of the chiefs(his best friend) was on vacation and left the Chief's vehicle for my DH to use to go to calls. (They do this quite often) Well, he was a like a little kid...:bounce:

Anyhow, going to a routine call he turns a corner and here's a big thud in the back of the truck (it's a Tahoe). This white "smoke" starts coming out ALL OVER the place and he finally gets to the call. (it was an alarm activation or something not serious). He gets out of the vehicle and looks like he had been in an avalanche. There was white powder everywhere!!! His hair/clothes, skin was all WHITE!!! The dry chemical extinguisher had gone off INSIDE the vehicle!!! Well, needless to say some other guys happened to have a digital thermal imaging camera and took pictures, of course!!!! They tease him constantly about this.

Anyone else have any funny stories???

Hi ladies - just found this thread...

I'm a wife of a volunteer too...

this is where he spent his morning - as soon as he heard the words "fully engulfed" his butt was outta bed faster then anything!

Luckily - no one was hurt in this one...but it closed down a better part of this highway for MUCH of the morning.

Isn't it amazing how fast those two words make them move!!! ::yes::

I can't tell from the pics. What was on fire?

sorry - it was the tractor trailer.

his company is close to a highway - so they respond to a lot of highway calls...if it's just for spilled fluid, he won't rush, but "fully engulfed" gets him moving.

funny - after he left I was in the bathroom getting ready for work...I heard our local VFD go by (DH volunteers in a neighboring town)...apparently 4 other towns responded for mutual aid on this call...7 engines were on the scene.

Wow, looks like a "Good One". (which sounds really bad/mean to those who don't know how the guys are...they love a "good fire")

so DH is off to weekly drill tonight at the FD. What's everyone else up to?

Our department drills on Thursdays. That is meeting day too. We also have weekly Bingo that the guys help out with on Fridays. I have to say, though, I hate when he comes home from that because he smells of cigarette smoke so bad. (Funny how that smells different from wood smoke!)

:wave2: Hi Girls ..... Sorry I missed last night . We had a Wrestling booster club meeting and it was a long one.
Dh was home last night and I had no bed !!!!!
Home again tonight ...BUt let me tell ya I'm going to roll like its 1999 Wend.night LOL

I know what you mean. Alot of times he comes home and I say "Take a shower you smell like FIREHOUSE!!!" He doesn't know what I mean but he does it anyway!!!

LOL It's great that your guys are so active (you mentioned the every Friday bingo) Around here the VFD are suffering for members. OUrs never has problems answering calls but others in the area do, especially during the daytime when everyone is at their "paying" jobs. There are 4 other FD's and ours who takes turns "manning" an engine for 8 hours during the day on different days of the week. OUr day is Wednesday, (which my DH happens to have off most of the time. I'm not really sure how that happened:confused: :D )

Mad4mickey...welcome back. We missed you:wave:

Who does the wrestling? It's not the little one in the picture is it? Very cute firefighter, by the way.
