Calling All Boma Lovers, Convince me man :)

zinkie: here's an example of the rotation. It's 2 yrs old so it may have changed some. You mentioned about WCC. We ate there as well last year and although the slapstick stuff was funny, we thought the food there was really mediocre at best. The best part of the meal? The milkshakes. I might go back, but for something small or a dessert or something. BTW, the Pap stuff is like grits ( :crazy2: so steer clear of that unless you like grits. Another good buffet place is Cape May Cafe at the Beach Club.

Thanks for posting that. If the rotation is still the same, Friday looks good to me. If it isn't the other ones look good too.

Thanks PBHARRIS4...

EEEEKKKK, man looking at this menu is REALLY scaring
the crap out of me now.. You see, my family of 4 (DW, DD-16, DD-14) will probably **not** want to try 80-85% of this food...

We are staying at AKL and arrive on Tuesday 4-11 at 3:00pm so I thought it would be wise to schedule a dinner on the home turf, ie. AKL..

Perhaps I should look for other options.. We are doing, the following other DEs: HDDR, Ohana, LeCellier, H&V..

Thoughts on this first night dinner, Boma may be too much over the top, but I want a nice dinner to start things out on close to AKL....

Thoughts???

Steve...

I have the PICKIEST DH in the universe - no kidding! Boma was our first dinner in WDW and we ALL loved it - which was me, DH, 11 yo DD, 6 yo DS, and 2 yo DS. There is so much to choose from and the atmosphere is awesome too. We went on Saturday BTW.

I am an adventurous eater in that I enjoy trying new foods- nothing that I would call bizarre- bugs etc.- but tastes from other countries and cultures. Sometimes one taste is enough, sometimes I find something I really like. I enjoyed Boma and would go back. I did not find the food very exotic, but I enjoyed trying everything.

I was wondering if it might be fun for the children to try different foods. A spoonful of something that looks interesting, no more if they don't care for it. It could be a learning experience- broaden their horizons- explore what other cultures eat.

I want to point out that we are adventurous eaters as well (or we were until Boma. :rotfl2: ) I mean, we're Chinese...we eat ANYTHING! But it just wasn't to our liking.

I said it in one thread that there was one particular spice that seemed to be used in all the food choices...and none of us were particularly thrilled by it so it pretty much killed the buffet for us.

They also stuck us in the darkest, crampest table in the dining room so the entire experience was somewhat lacking.

I wish the hummus, flatbread and the desserts were at another buffet so I could enjoy those. :teeth:

There are alot of bad reviews about Boma and I really don't understand why other than some are afraid to try new things. I just loved Boma! I don't remember ever eating so much! I tried alot of things. Some things I didn't care about too much but I just got something else. That's the beauty of buffets! ( : Very good food! I also remember it being very very busy. I would love to do it again! I actually tried to squeeze it in for my trip next week but didnt' have enough time. Have to next time! Enjoy!

I think that the food offerings are seasoned differently that what some are used to. I enjoyed most of the food that I sampled, and I also wished that I had room for more. My DH enjoyed the prime rib, tried other foods, and just wasn't crazy about it. The rest of my family really did not like it.

They were not afraid of new foods, indeed they are adventurour eaters, this just was not a favorite.

I would go again in a heartbeat, but I would need to join another family, mine have asked that I do not book this one again. :( I would encourage people to try it.

We weren't afraid to try new things. We just didn't like it. Nobody has the same tastes. It just wasn't for us. Most of the stuff in the buffet was not to our liking so it's like we could pick anything else.

Now don't get me wrong. We didn't leave the buffet starving. We ate more of the stuff we did find palatable. But ... I didn't pay all that money to eat to only eat prime rib and hummus. (Well, I may pay that to eat a gazillion zebra domes :rotfl: )

It's just one of these things...just because we hated it doesn't mean we're wrong it means our taste buds work differently.

For us, the biggest problem was expectations. We'd gone in with the understanding that the food was "very good" - and not that it was "very good for a buffet" that it was very good when compared with sit down restaurants. Its good for a buffet, but, IMHO, buffet food is usually barely qualifies as food. So I'd gone in expecting steak house prime rib and got buffet prime rib. Fish house salmon and got buffet salmon. Fresh couscous from the kitchen and got couscous salads that had been made hours before. The raves about the desserts were particularly disappointing, but I'm a dessert snob. Stale zebra domes and brownies do not make "the best dessert I've ever had" - I've had food wrapped in cellophane that was better. My expectations were definately unreasonable, but honestly, we thought the Biergarten buffet had better food.

By the way, we are adventurous eaters to - we aren't Chinese, but our son is Korean. We regularly eat Indian, Thai, Chinese, Japanese, and even African.

If we were staying at AKL and didn't want the expense and bother of Jiko, we'd go back to Boma. But I wouldn't go out of my way for it, and I'd eat at Jiko first, and probably Mara second - Mara has some darn good food for counter service.

We are adventurous eaters, but we did not enjoy Boma. It did not live up to the hype and we found many of the flavors to be rather boring since the spices repeated throughout numerous dishes. We did enjoy the pineapple cheesecake and coconut pudding, but wouldn't bother going back.

I know exactly what you are saying about that particular spice being in all the food choices! We felt the exact same thing. It's like they threw that spice into every dish in an effort to make it seem more exotic. It tasted sort of like a mixture of cinnamon and cloves. I found it rather annoying since I've eaten at African restaurants here in L.A. and never tasted that same spice in everything before. I found the food to be rather monotonous because of that. It's definitely not the right kind of spicy.

I did like Boma but am totally with you on the desserts. I was really looking forward to those Zebra Domes and they were a huge disappointment. I mean, they weren't bad but, listening to some people on the DIS go on and on about them--well--I guess my expectations were high. I rather enjoyed the bread pudding with the sauce that was out there (no one's ever mentioned it). I did find that the entire dessert pod wasn't up to par with some of the other Disney buffets. It looked nice but nothing that turned me into a glutton. I still think, for a buffet, the Cape May has a fabulous dessert area.

Why assume that someone who doesn't like Boma doesn't like different or new things? We eat a variety of ethnic dishes and living in L.A. exposes us to a huge variety of cultures and foods. I have eaten at African restaurants before and I have enjoyed them. Boma tries to be ethnic, but also tries to appeal to blander diets. That's their mistake, IMO. Add that to the fact that's it's a buffet and you get a lesser quality meal.
