While I understand if there's an emergency or something, it seems like it's a case of last come, first served.

Isn't it fun when people say "Hey, so & so is on the other line, can I call you back"? I've even gotten the occasional "Hey, can you call me back later?"

I don't have call waiting, but I know people that do and I can't stand it when I'm put on hold FOREVER. My cousin has a bad habbit of it. She'll say hold on and be gone FOREVER before she comes back and say can I call you back later. It gets on my nerves.

I dont usually answer the other line... I think it's rude too... I alos love it when someone calls YOU and goes can you hold on a second.... I always hang up.

You know Jeff that is kind of annoying *beep* hold on

sorry will have to get back to you on this later. Bye

I absolutely agree, JEFF.:) :) :) :)

Call-Waiting is VERBOTEN in our household. With our voicemail system, callers can always leave a message if we're on the phone:jester: .......

I have caller ID plus callwaiting sothe number even registers for the incoming second call, I can chose toanswer it if it is my 85 yr. old father, I always do and for every one else I call back.:D

With a teenage dd we had to get call waiting. But she knows that she has to hang up when a call comes for me period. And I never leave someone waiting for very long at all. Just long enough to take a message and I will call them back.

I just call the 2nd person back after I am done with the first..I think there's been 1 time when I was on the phone & someone else called..

Sorry about that Jeff, now what were we talking about??

LOL, sorry dear Jeff - I just could not resist. :)

I agree that sometimes people can be really rude about it, I'm thinking of one friend in particular.

We got it when our kids were teens. I could do without it now.

I personally like call waiting. Some calls are important, and some are just shooting the breeze. Call waiting allows me to shoot the breeze without worrying about missing something important. Hey, maybe you ARE less important than the other call. I hate it when I'm shooting the breeze with A, get the buzz from B who also wants to shoot the breeze, and B won't let me get back to A. (In this case, I'd get back to talking with A and call B back later, unless B was long distance or hard to get a hold of.)

Gail,

We have the same(call waiting caller ID), so if we see it is 1 of our parents or daughter, we always answer. If it is one of our daughters friends, we let it go to voice mail.
IMO call waiting is a lot better than getting a busy signal for 1 hr. I have more important things to do than keep redialing every 5 minutes to see if the line is open.
Also, anyone that has kids that are over 16 and drive, should have call waiting. What if their was an accident(emergency) and you are just gossiping on the phone??

One of my pet peeves - I despise call waiting. We don't have it and never will. I don't particularly like talking on the phone to begin with and dislike interruptions even more. Put the two together and I'm ready to climb the walls. I can see it in special circumstances if someone were waiting for an important call and forewarns me ahead of time, but I had one friend who I swear would put me on hold every few seconds to take another call. And often they were just telemarketers  Now I've gotten so fed up I just hang up if I'm on hold for more than a few seconds.

i'm a fan of call waiting. i think it can be used without being rude.

I have call waiting. I think it's important when you have children. It might be an important call on the other line. I quickly switch over and then, if it's not a dire emergency, tell them I will return their call and return to the first call. :)

We have had caller ID and call waiting forever it seems, and those, along with call waiting-caller ID and a four slot voice-mail on the home phone, allow us to easily manage calls. It is very important to have good phone manners with their use however.

When the kids were teens, and even now (both are still home), those features were, to us, indispensible. I myself rarely use the house phones, always opting for my cell. If anyone calls me, they call my cell. So I rarely look at or answer the house phone. Privacy Manager has also contributed to virtually zero solicitation calls, well worth the cost.

With call-waiting, caller ID, it's much easier to KNOW right away if I need to put someone on hold, call them back OR, let the call go to voice mail (usually voice mail).

I don't take most '2nd' calls but, in rare instances, I've had to. Alternatively, I've had some pretty rude people/family do it to me and, it's unpleasant, to say the least. :(

I know some teenagers that use this system for a way of 3-way and even 4-way calling.

Those of us with TEEN AGE kids know that call waiting is a necessary evil. Our rules are the same as Serena's.. It has been a blessing in our home as it saved my eldest ds life when he was in highschool.. We would have killed him otherwise due to the constant phone war prior to call-waiting installation.

I am polite when I have to interupt a conversation to answer the beep I do this mostly when the kids are not home.
