I am having an outpatient surgery tomorrow morning under general anesthesia. I am really scared about being put out. I know many people do it, but can't seem to get past it. DH is not overly supportive.

Can you wave some pixie dust my way???

Thanks!!!!

Loads of pixie dust to you!

I'm sure everything will go well. Take care of yourself.

Do you have to have a general? When I had my hysterectomy I asked for, and got, an epidural. Could you ask the anesthesiologist for other options?

In any case, I'm sure you'll be fine. The surgery and recovery will be over in a few days, and you'll be able to look back and laugh.

barb d - Asked that same question, but Dr. would not budge. I was totally okay with the procedure under local. My procedure is not as drastic as a hysterectomy. Only having uterine ablation. Thanks for the support.

P and PD being sent your way. Don't worry about your DH. If he is like mine, not showing worry and pretending it isn't happening is his way of "dealing" with worry.

Im with your husband, Im not gonna be overly supportive, so here is just a wee little bit og pixie dust pixiedust: :crazy2:

:grouphug: You'll be okay. It takes longer to put you to sleep & wake up again than it does to do the procedure. It's very quick. You won't be asleep long and when you wake up its all over. Ask the anesthesiologist if he can give you something to help you relax when you get there. Usually they can give you something in your IV. Then you will relax and not be bothered by the lights or sounds of the hospital environment. Best of luck to you. This procedure totally changed my life! I'd do it again is a New York minute :thumbsup2

I haven't had this specific procedure before, but they did put me out for my knee surgery last year. I was so afraid of the anesthesia, but they gave me something in my i.v. that made me relax and kind of go a little loopy. :p I remember one of the nurses in the OR had tropical fish scrubs and a matching hair cover thing-y and I told her she had a nice hat. Then I closed my eyes and opened them about 3 or 4 hours later. :goodvibes

:p That pre-op shot makes all the difference in the world.

Thoughts and prayers and pixiedust:

I was scared, too, when I went for surgery several years ago. But before I knew it, I was waking up in the recovery room! It all went very quick! :grouphug:

Tell them you are scared as soon as you get there. They will give you some "happy juice" and make it all better! :goodvibes
I've had one surgery a year for the past 4 years, and I always get really scared. Just try not to think about it too much. Worry will only make you feel worse.
Pixie Dust for you... pixiedust: pixiedust: pixiedust:

I was put under for the first time in June and I was also worried - but everything was ok.

Just a warning tho....I was ok immediately after I "woke up", but then got naseuous (sp?) and vomitted once and felt MUCH better. I don't say this to alarm you, but just to let you know that you *may* feel a bit sick afterwards and that is normal.

Good luck to you! :)

You'll be fine. I had an ablation in March. The anesthesiologist said it'd be local, but I found out at the hospital that my doctor only does it under general. Not a biggie.

In my case, I had a vein stripping the next day. My vascular surgeon normally does those under general, but the fact that he'd done one on me before and that I'd had general anesthesia the day before made him ask if I wanted it under local.

Actually, there are three levels of anesthesia:

local - when they just numb the area being operated on.
???? (LPAC) - I forget the name of this type. This is what most peolpe have. You get an IV and they give you stuff like Versed and maybe another drug to put you under.
General - A different type of anesthesia that totally slows down the body, you are way under, and you get a breathing tube. This is the "scary" kindo of anesthesia. They usually only use this type for major types of surgery such as thyroidectomies, hysterectomies, mastectomies, etc.

If you have breast lumps removed, tubal ligation, stuff like that--usually you will get the mid-level. This is probably what you are having done and it's really easy and safe.

You'll be fine. I've had 3 surgies. The first was knee surgery- local- no big deal. The other two I was put under. That was the scariest part of both of those surgies for me. I came through both with no problem. Ask your doctor before the surgery if he will give you something for the nausea. Mine did and I wasn't sick at all. It will be over before you know it.

Which doctor wouldn't budge? The gyn or the anesthesiologist? If it's the gyn, you're probably stuck. If it's the anesthesiologist, maybe you'll get a different one tomorrow.

Mine was an abdominal hysterectomy -- major surgery -- plus I was having some other stuff done by another surgeon while they were in there -- and they did the whole thing with an epidural and something to make me drowsy.

Thanks to you all for the support. I am still scared, but DEFINITELY am asking for the happy juice tomorrow.

To Christine - I was hoping for the twilight anesthesia, but in pre-op I was warned about the tube and a scratchy throat, bummer!!!!

To Barb - GYN did not budge! Bummer - wanted it under local. I had a D & C 6 years ago under local after a miscarriage. NO PROBLEM!!!! Would have prefered....

Darn! FWIW, I had that with my thyroidectomy and it did not give me a scratchy throat.
