Call from DVC after submitting resale?

About 9 months ago we met with a Disney/DVC person to get info about buying DVC. We didn't buy anything at the time and started looking into it more seriously. Two weeks ago we decided to buy resale. We made an offer and we are now in ROFR, waiting to hear...and we just now, this morning, got a follow up call from Disney about buying direct and seeing if we are still interested. Is it just a coincidence that they called us? It is 9 months after meeting with them and right after we decided to go resale. Or do they know- match our name/address? Just curious why they suddenly reached out to us and if this is standard. Thanks.

I say coincidence, Disney is suffering from slow sales. They want to close out the poly and move on to copper creek.

Agree. Coincidence. Typical sales activity.

To be honest, if they had all their poop together, it would be a flag in their prospect database and the resale ROFR would trigger that.

That said, they don't seem to typically be that together.

We had the same thing happen when we started a resale purchase, we made it through ROFR with no problems.

I do not think it is coincidence, I think they must have some database that pops up a message to alert that a potential buyer is buying resale

I don't see why Disney would waste their time, I doubt if a buyer would stop the resale process to pay more to buy direct.

They should have such a database. It is a best practice.

They do but I don't see them calling you during the resale buying process, their time would be better spent going after other leads. We have had our guide mention our resale purchases during a conversation when VGF was going on sale so they know what we own. They also have access to info about your upcoming Disney vacations, we often get a hello touching bases call from our guide.

Before I bought resale, I had been speaking with a guide about buying direct. After I closed on my resale contract, I received a welcome postcard with from my guide. He also sent us/left us a card during our first stay as DVC members, even though I bought resale. So, guides must receive notice some how.

They don't typically do this from what we know but I doubt it's coincidence. My guess is they regularly look at this component and notify the respective guide who may or may not call. Exactly how, when or how consistently I don't know. We have known for a long time that guides do get the info at some point.

Remember ROFR is mostly about pushing people to resale. So just getting this on the internet might be enough pressure for some to not go that route in this situation. They likely should ROFR anything they could justify otherwise for one who's been looking retail within certain parameters, some (not all) would end up with retail. ROFR actually is foremost a purposeful aggravation.

Thank you everyone for your thoughts. Waiting to hear on ROFR makes me want to read into any potential meaning to the call (did they call because they know they are taking our contract?!?)...but I guess we just have to wait it out.

I really like my DVC guide Chris M, but have not bought from Disney in a while. I have bought a few resale contracts and never received any calls. So I guess that a technique to pass ROFR is to NOT take a DVC tour or speak to a guide (hmmmm.)

Just a thought...with the removal of so many benefits to buying direct, there has been a lot of recommendations to buy your first contract via resale and then add on 25 points direct in order to retain most of the membership benefits. Perhaps the guides are using this philosophy to their advantage and contacting new resale purchasers.

We haven't seen any real indication that they're taking under ROFR because someone has shown and interest in retail but they could.

We may see a change such that 25 points won't qualify at some point in the future.

I agree with this prediction, and, I think if they are going to have a restriction like the current one, then they should probably close the 25 point loophole and make it something like a 100 points minimum, etc.

the first round of restrictions did not bother me at all and the second round have no effect as I am an original owner via Disney, but the future round of restrictions may impact me more.

I personally like to REWARD behavior like offering cool perks to people that buy direct, rather than PUNISH resale buyers with not allowing certain benefits.

Disney is still selling tons of points and so far, the resale market has not been that major of a distraction to new sales.

In Nov. 2002, we visited WDW and made an appointment to take a sales tour of BCV. Unfortunately, our 11 month old did contracted the Norwalk virus, and we ended up in Orlando Children's hospital for 5 days. After a day in the hospital, I got it as well, and that appointment was the last thing on my mind.

Flash forward 18 months, and I begin looking into DVC again. I called up to ask about purchasing (SSR was in presages), and they asked my info. After I gave it to the receptionist, she said (In a haughty way). "Can I asked why you didn't show, or call to cancel your appointment with us in 2002?"

I was surprised that Disney tracked such things, and even more surprised by her tone. I was still pretty mad at WDW over the whole trip, as Orlando was a NIGHTMARE of super sick people coming off their cruise ships, and Disney was not warning anyone about this being contracted in the parks as well. Anyway, I went OFF on the receptionist, and she quickly backed down and transferred me to a guide, who was sweet enough to make up for her snottiness. But, I realized then that Disney tracks a LOT of things. I would not be surprised to learn that the call was NOT a coincidence.

I'm guessing 50 but we'll see. There really isn't enough add on they can reasonably do, it'll have to be some punishment. Plus as we've already seen, any add on for someone is already perceived as someone else's punishment. A VIP program would be more of both.

Is there any rumor going around that they are about to up the min. direct buy in? We are resale buyers (just barely made it through before the changes last year), but I would consider buying 25 direct points. Not interested in more than that though...
