California-style Mexican Food at San Angel Inn?

I would like to make a PS for San Angel Inn. However, my DFi isn't one for traditional Mexican food. He likes your typical tacos, fajittas, quesidillas.... Looking over the menu I can't seen to find anything fitting the bill. Could someone tell me if they have more "California-style" Mexican items (like a simple taco) that aren't on the menu?

You'll read plenty of dissenting opinions about San Angel: some claim the food does authentic Mexican cuisine a disservice, while others say it's the best Mexican food they've ever had.

I'm in the middle. You will find the typical Mexican fare on the menu (tacos, quesadillas), but also stuff like "mole poblano" which is almost impossible to find unless you live in Texas or have an exceptional Mexican restaurant in your hometown. The atmosphere, arguably, is San Angel's selling point: it's cool, dark, by the Rio Del Tiemp boat ride - very romantic. The atmosphere actually trumps the food.

My suggestion? Be adventurous! Go for something you've never ordered!

you know, i'm not one for traditional mexican food either but BF and I tried San Angel Inn last year when we were there and it was actually very good. It's not "hard core" mexican but it's also not "taco bell"...I've had better and I've had worse.

I agree that the atmosphere of the resturaunt is even better than the food. We had a table for 2 right along the railing so we could watch the boats of people go by on the ride, it was very dark and it was a really romantic atmosphere...we loved it!

Thank you so much. We will definitely give it a try. Why isn't this non-traditional Mexican on the menu at All Ears Net I wonder? Hmmm...

San Angel Inn is very good. Our daughter lives in CA, and this restaurant, for lunch is a must do for her..every time we go to EPCOT.

:earsgirl: We ate at the San Angel Inn on Sunday night. It was delicious! We had PS for 6:00. My DH commented that the steak on his platter was awesome. I know that there are a handful of folks who hate this restaurant but it's a "must eat" for our family when we're in town.

I love love love the atmosphere of this restaurant, but the food is bad. We have tried several times. What we are going to do this trip is go there for a chips and cheese snack. It'll be a great place for a mid-afternoon break.

DH and I ate dinner at San Angel Inn for the first time 2 weeks ago. We thought the food was good and the atmosphere fantastic.

There is a small (2 item!) vegetarian menu from which I ordered a "combination platter" that included burrito-type items that were filled with fresh veggies, beans, and cheese, but I didn't see any Tex-Mex style burritos, tacos, etc. on the menu.

See, this is what I'm worried about. There aren't any listed on All Ears Net either but yet everyone keeps telling me they have them. Do you just have to ask for them?

Read over the descriptions in AllEars. They're hiding under different Spanish names. For example:

"Plato Mexicano - Beef Tenderloin Tampiquena, chicken enchilada, and ground beef burrito, served with refried beans and rice $19.50"

Like I said, why don't you try something a little more adventurous? The setting DEMANDS it!!!

We really enjoyed the food here . I wonder sometimes if it depends on what you order and what you are expecting. We wanted something more than tacos,,, and the usual so we really enjoyed it.
I would make a PS here and somewhere else. Then a head of time stop in and see if this is where you want to eat and look at the menu. If not you can just cancel the PS (you don't even really need to cancel it but it's polite to do so :) )

We like a lot of different kinds of Mexican food, especially Tex-Mex and didn't care for the food at San Angel. Perhaps it was just the items we chose. None of us got steak and locally I can tell you some of the best steaks around here locally are at Mexican restaurants which use mesquite, etc. to grill their meats. I might try it again and order that. The atmosphere at San Angel is very nice, albeit a little crowded at some tables, great margaritas and service just depends on who you get.

The type of food that you are describing is exactly the type of Mexican food that I enjoy.

My favorite place to get Mexican food in WDW is across the walkway from San Angel Inn. It is the counter service restaurant called "Cantina de San Angel". Yes, the tables are outdoors, and it is not as romantic, but it sounds like your husband will love their food. I do! It is a must for us. BTW, get their early enough before Illuminations, and you can snag a table with an excellent view of the fireworks. Hope this helps.

edit: oh yeah, it isn't nearly as expensive as San Angel Inn!

From what i saw there are more traditioal mexican foods on the lunch menu..taco's etc.. Maybe you could have lunch

Thanks for the info. I think we will keep our plan to have dinner there the first night...after we arrive. I plan to try something different. It was more my DFi I was worried about as he is a picky eater.

The steak dish is very good. It is a grilled steak with ranchero sauce and cheese melted over it. I make it at home now and the flavors will be familiar to someone who has Mexican food in the Western US. The combination plate listed above will likely be a huge hit.

The other dish that is a must try is the Queso Fundido. It is a baking dish with cooked chorizo sausage in it that is then covered in a ton of jack cheese and broiled. It is served in soft flour tortillas. It is a very simple dish but outstanding and again will have flavors familiar to your DH - especially if he's a fan of breakfast tacos - the chorizo served there is better than what I can buy at any markets in our area.
